Hmm... overall, considering every pro and con that matters with painting techniques, I prefer metallics. As Generulpurplepoxolax or whatever he\'s called (sorry :D) said, You can control the light just as well with metallics. They both have their own merits, for good comparison check out (just for example) Alexi_Z\'s and Silphid\'s galleries for awesome NMM, and compare it to Jakob Nielsen\'s, Bragon\'s, AllanC\'s or the galleries of Spanish Team members for awesome metallics. I think you will find both techniques can look just as fantastic when well applied

As a viewer of miniatures,

While both are appealing to me, I do prefer the \'graphic novel\' look that NMM can achieve.

Also, the wow factor of great NMM seems always much more than even the best metallics can come close to.

As a painter, I also prefer NMM, although I think I can do metallics much better.

I beg to differ :)

NMM looks ace if done properly, but can look quite poor quality if you make a mistake. I\'ve never been keen on metallics when it comes to using them, but I apreciate others work with it. Just personal preferance. :)

Not fair bill must always post a link when showing of a mini. It certainly has the wow factor.

The Spanish team have developed metals to a very high degree tho. Its almost NMM with the M but not quite MNMM I think .... man its early and my head hurts.

metallics baby! all of the same painting techniques used on nmm can be applied to MM - dynamic hilighting and shading, sky earth etc. i love the reflective shimmery quality and realism it can bring as well. both techniques are very versitile, but i reserve nmm for non metallic surfaces on my minis - it gives me more variety; im able to employ both techniques on the same mini.

[chant] metallics! metallics! metallics! [/chant]

GW said they think the next big step in painting models will be, when people start painting the actual reflection of the model itself...onto other parts of the model.

Example. You have a knight holding a sword. BOth are shiny new metal. The sword should be reflected in some parts of the armour and vice versa.

The same with colours. Have red robes relfecting in the armour realistically.

I prefer NMM, but I would never be able to do it
Hell I can\'t even highlight properly
Sticking to metallics is easier
Oh yes, post no# 400

On 30ish mm sized miniatures I prefer to use NMM, because I think the metallic pigment works poorly on miniatures as small as that (the pigment is quite grainy compared to the pigments of matte paints). On bigger miniatures I prefer metallics both because the pigment issue is not a problem and also because it gets more and more difficult to produce convincing NMM as the scale gets bigger.

This is entirely my personal preferences and I do enjoy well done metallics even on 30 mm miniatures. I just don\'t enjoy doing it myself! :)
