None-Standard WIP (5+ years, 95+ bits)

Hi all,

Some 5-6 years ago the Ironclad dreadnought came out, and i decided to buy one and convert it in to something big......
"None-Standard"
View attachment 21984

And every so often I'd change something, find a new bit or start a completely new base
But I was never really satisfied with it.....

Until it all clicked into place and turned into something awesome

For the last year, this beast has been growing..... but without turning into a disproportionate and cumbersome brute.
And this last week has been a rollercoaster of inspiration and progress.

And now I'd like to share this project with this community because this website has always been an inspiration and a great source of knowledge to me.

So... here we go....
(I'm actually kind of nervous )

The model itself consists of over 95 different parts, from almost every faction (Tau is planned, no sm-subdexes, no dark eldar), all glued or pinned together (i recently compiled a complete list, from memory :p )
The base consists of treebark, cork, vines and random bits and wallfiller

And just for fun, i'll include a picture with a spacemarine for scale

There's still a lot of work to do, more detail on the base, more wires and general repairs and finishing.
I'm still looking around for a carnifex head to use as a "head" (even though the active head will be "chestmounted")
2 shoulder guards (probably necron chestplates)
And I'm thinking about 3 death-cult assassins flitting across the scene (swinging from the spear, jumping of the leg, running across the floor)

Let me know what you think, I'm hoping to turn this thread into an actual WIP and keep the project running

Thanks,

That left deathcult assassin is one of my favourite models ever, and actually one of the reasons why i want to include the assassins.
I want to use Dark Eldar Wyches to convert the assassins, and one of them will closely resemble that model

Dont worry, the dread will be the focal point of the scene, but looking at just the dread on the base, i keep forgetting how massively huge it actually is (i could fit a SM dreadnought underneath it!).
So i want to include at least 1 man-sized model on the base.

For some reason the idea of 3 death cult assassins racing acrobatically across the scenejust wont leave my mind
#1 will be in front of the shrine, the classic, swords raised.... ready to join battle just outside of the scene
#2 vaulting of the dread's right lower leg, either 1 sword drawn or none
#3 either swinging under the spear, one hand on the spear, the other either holding a sword or reaching for her next grip

I want to create the idea that the dread is right in the middle of the engagement, assassins running past, seconds away from their next target

The dread itself will be painted in light, bright colors (white for anything armoured, red/copper for mechanical parts).
While the base will be dark stone and earth, with the assassins in black ofcourse.

The size and color will make absolutely sure the dread stands out

I'm also thinking about including 2-4 small voidshield-drone-hovering-thingies (small tau drone with brightly ligthninged transparent spherical shields expanding from them (with actual impacts))

Ive done a mockup of 4 different positions for the assassins

#1 Swinging from the spear, just entering the scene (my least favourite, it just looks wrong)
#2 Jumping forward from the ankle, gripping a hip for extra momentum. one sword drawn, grip reversed and held casually out of the way (great agressive pose, with a lot of speed. Nicely hidden behind the dread itself)
#3 Jumping off the shrine. Left sword drawn, grip reversed and held forward. Drawing the right sword, grip reversed (nice athletic pose)
#4 Charging forward, swords held back with the grips reversed (Great pose, lots of speed, lots of agression. The direction and position on the base also confirm that something is going on just outside the scene)

All of these poses will be tweaked and i'll probably keep 2-3 of them because they fill up the base, lend some sense of scale to the model and create the illusion of a larger engagement.
I'm just not sure how many and which.

Ah! Your attachments are invalids, so much drool - oh, no wait. Invalid. Well, that's slightly less disturbing...

Definitely an impressive bit of kitbashing/creativity. The only thing that seems off to me is the gun made from Eldar lances. They still scream Eldar, and thus seem out of place. Like they were added as an afterthought. I'm sure that's not the case, but to me it doesn't match the aesthetic of the rest. Just my two cents.

I've tried to use bits from different races for different parts of the model.
It's meant to be a sort of experimental cooperation between the Adeptus Mechanicus and the Ordo Xenos

the weapons are eldar
the armour and machanics are imperial (SM and guard)
the "innards" are organic (tyranid)
the shielding will be tau
and some high tech parts from necrons

Originally I wanted the 3 spears suspended on lightning around the central one, but that just didn't look sturdy enough

This project promises to be epic. :)

The assassins are a great add but, somehow, i find the whole idea funny.. don't get me wrong, it's just my twisted mind.

I see you used cork to create the floor and the steps: may i ask you how do you treat/cancel the texture of the material ?

I got some more work done on the assassins tonight.

I'm pretty much done posing them and replaced the original weapons with steelwire which will later become Katana.
I've still got a bit of work finishing the models, mostly cutting off spikey bits and greenstuffing holes.
But the models are coming together, and i really like the poses. (specialy the middle one, just drawing his blade)
I'm just wondering if the swords aren't too long.....

I've just put the models on bases to make it easier to work on them, but these wires will later be used to secure the models on the dread/base.

I'm hoping to finish these tomorrow and be able to post pics of them in position.

@crudelus,
The assassins are kind of meant to be funny, they are so insignificantly small compared to the dread.
And they were mostly included to give the model a sense of scale, and to land a bit of speed and dynamic to the scene, since the dread itself has quite a stationary pose.

On cork, I actually want the rough surface texture on this project. The base should look like an old, weathered shrine.
But I understand the question, and I've asked myself that question before.

So far I've thought of a couple of possible solutions to the problem:
1) water down some plaster or wall filler and apply it to the surface of the cork. This should still give kind of a stony surface, but could be sanded smooth.
2) do the above, with liquid greenstuff
3) do the same with paint, sand and repeat until satisfied (kind of tried this one. it seems to work, and is the basis for the above)
4) simply sand the cork surface. sanding it removes the sharp contrast and softens the feel of the material (although the soft loose fibers might be tricky to paint on (i'm kind of trying this one on the dread :s )
5) simply use plasticard for the tile's surface, with cork underneath it to simulate crumbling rock or earth (great technique, tried, tested and approved)

Any tips, comments or questions are welcome.

Not much work done these last few days.
Some filling on the dread and the assassins.
And Ive started to remove all the spikes and glyphs from the assassins.

To be honest, I am kind of stuck on the swords......
I've been trying different ways to make them, but none give me the desired result..... (these are to large)
Does anyone know a good tutorial on how to make swords?

Next on my list of experiments is gluing two pieces of plasticard together and shaping it with a blade.
