noobie question on cover saves

Just played my first game of 40k in 5 years (a few games of 3rd edition back then), and it\'s amazing how fast someone can forget about the rules! :) But in general I think the new edition of 40k is much easier to play.

My friend and I are having some doubts on how to roll cover saves. For example my Space Marine has a 3+ armour save and stands in a crater with 4+ cover save. If his 3+ armour save fails, can he still do the 4+ roll for cover save?

Thanks

No, you only ever get to roll one save. The situation determins the same allowed, so in your SM\'s case and in the absence of anything (AP3..etc) which would negate your 3+ then you roll your power armour save.

yes, you choose the best save available to you.

certain weapons and circumstances negate certain types of save, eventually when you have all the variables an appropriate save will come out the other end, but you only ever get to save once.

There are three types of save: armour, cover and invulnerable but you can only take ONE of those. In the case of the marine he would normally take his 3+ armour save. If however he was hit by a weapon which allowed him no armour save, either because of a special rule or because it had an ap of 3 or less it would cancel his armour save leaving him with a 4+ cover save. If that hit also allowed no cover save (flamer template and certain other weapons etc.) then he would get no save whatsoever. If he was lucky enough to be equipped with a combat shield he would benefit from an invulnerable save of 6+.

You can always take the best save the model has available to it but you can only take one save per wounding hit. This is unlike fantasy where you can take ward saves seperately to armour saves.
