Right, that does it. Never touching any GW varnish product again as long as I live. They take it off sale to fix the \'white misting\'. Now it\'s back and I get a can. I like to use it as a first coat before dulling it down with a blast of testors.

So, new can gets a quick test on an old fig. Fine. Now comes the fun bit.

I spray my, now finished, Golden Demon entry (from the thread a week or so ago). White bloody specks everywhere. Frosty the bleedin\' orc.

Want to find things to be violent to right now. GAAAAAAGGGHHH!!!!

Am attempting damage limitation. Used a paint on gloss and that seems to have got rid of the worst of it, though the finish is looking pretty ropey right now.

Can everyone say a prayer for later when I blast it with dullcote?

I haven\'t used the GW stuff (heard too many horror stories, and it\'s too glossy for my taste anyway), but I know that many varnishes, like spray paints, can be helped out by immersing the can in some warm water for a few minutes.

Hopefully the dullcote will help. Just make sure to use two or three light coats instead of one big one (made that mistake myself, and had \"dullcote\" become \"shinycote\").

Well, it looks as though I\'ve dodged a bullet. The dullcote seems to have saved my skin (or the Orc\'s in this case).

Phew. Calm.

Sturm, what paint on varnish are you using? The finish on the [censored] that you sent the other day is pretty good.

Cheers for the info. Gotta give the brush-on Testors Dullcote a proper try sometime. Got a few bottles of it here...

Dullcote can give the white mist look also when it\'s humid. I found that paint thinner gets rid of the white and has helped save figures from certain death. I think the white is water that gets trapped in the lacquer and the thinner frees it up so it can evaporate.

Anyways, good luck with your entries. Hope the spray didn\'t ruin anything.

SBJ, before you brush on the dulcoat, give a shot of gloss clear. I am having troubles with the brush on floating my inks.

Pulled the red ink out of her hair and let it all over her skin and white puff ball. (gotta fix it, then post it.)

A light coat of gloss clear (krylon) then brush on the dulcoat from now on for me.

Hi, my name is Wealon and I had horrible experiences with varnish. Since then, I sacrifice lambs daily in prayer to the varnish gods and hire an astrologist to tell me what the best time and place are to seal my minis. lol

or, you could be like me, who isn\'t doing the varnish thing till after games day. Mind you, I stiull got 2 cans of the old varnish

The little tins of revell matt varnish that simon uses works well . I tried some on recomendation from him and it drys really matt. I now do the same as simon. Store the tin upsidedown and when varnishing use only the stuff that gathers on the lid - the really matt stuff. Works a treat.

Well, it\'s a day later and my demon entry is sitting proudly in my cabinet awaiting October 3rd. He\'s all nicely varnished now and there\'s no real clue to the disasters of yesterday.

And Tammy, I have a very good reason for varnishing minis before Games Day. It has nothing to do with protection and everything to do with the finish. A really good varnish (a very matt one) is a great paint leveller and really evens out the paintjob. Of course, each to their own. I know many painters who have been more successful than I who never touch their minis with varnish.

Ah well, 1 demon entry down and I started another today. Required an industrial amount of drilling out areas to get rid of details. Now I\'m ready to start puttying and converting. The first demon entry is unconverted. This one is going to use every cool technique I can muster in modelling and painting. Hopefully an entry with more potential in the contest than the first :cool:
