That\'s a great shame........They\'re going to struggle to find someone who can bring the awe inspring Midde-earth look like good old PJ did.

I should imagine the film will be crap now.

Downgrades the movie farther for me to \"will most likely suck\". I have little faith in the movie companies to make a faithful adaption of well... anything.

ok the lotr movies are now classics, and whatever they make will rake in the cash, my worry is with the \"other prequal\" they\'re getting into the ringing the dishcloth stage, if they\'re not going to do it properly they shoudln\'t do it at all.

I have had my doubts about The Hobbit as I have felt it is mostly about cashing in from the LOTR hype. In a way, I\'m happy PJ is off this project as it will not \"taint\" the LOTR trilogy in the same way if The Hobbit doesn\'t become a good film.

The news about that second prequel makes me even more doubtful about this whole thing... That\'s clearly a way of cashing in and I see no real point in it.

I can see how this could turn into quite the cluster.... too bad, as the first three were so good. I still remember the excitement I felt to walk into the theatre and watch the fellowship...

TBH I never liked the book as much as the LoTR books :/

I didn\'t know about this until I read this thread, and in a way I agree with Ritual, but similarly, it\'s never good to see someone screw up a remake of something you previously really liked :/

On the plus side, at least it will only be one sucky movie, and one movie that might suck. Unlike Star Wars which was 3 sucky prequels

I think you\'re jumping to conclusions here... The fact that PJ is off the project doesn\'t automatically mean that the movie(s) will suck, just like it wouldn\'t automatically mean it/they would be good if he had done them.

We\'ll just have to wait and see and judge when we have something to judge! :)

I heard Wesley Snipes is going to play Bilbo and they\'re shooting the entire film in Namibia (where he is hiding for tax purposes). Baz Luhrman will direct and Claire Danes will play \"the Goblin King\".

Oh, great. New Line will probably hire some music video director who\'s probably never even read The Hobbit and they\'ll be more concerned with the money aspect than the great storytelling and artistic aspects.

:cussing: movie studios.

@Hoblit: Agree 100%.

I wonder how much of this is posturing and bluffing from both parties?

Now PJ is making a public plea possibly to put pressure (oh illiteration!) on the studios....

Anyhow...I would have loved to see PJ\'s version of the Hobbit. The story is much more whisical that the darkness of the LOTR, and I was hoping to see him capture that.

We\'ll see what happens. The Hobbit deserves to be done well, but I\'m not sure it needs to be PJ running the show. He would have to make a rather dramatic change in his style to suit the themes of the Hobbit - it is much more whimsical than LOTR as supervike has already pointed out. Talking animals, drunk elves, etc. - much more a children\'s fairy tale than the epic LOTR.
