I enjoy Douglas Coupland: \"Microserfs\", \"Shampoo Planet\", \"Girlfriend in a Coma\", \"Hey Nostradamus\" etc. However they might seem weird or silly to someone a little older than my-Gen-X-self... But they ARE well written, with interesting characters and bizarrely engrossing plots.

The others in the series are all right, but it was a stand-alone, first.

I just picked this up the other day...and am planning on reading it...if I can ever get it started!

EXCELLENT choice! I loved that one, and he\'s one of only two authors where if something comes out for that series, I\'ll buy the hardback. I really don\'t enjoy politics, but his later books in the series I found very enjoyable also.

The other one is Steven Brust. The Vlad Taltos series or anything from that \"world\" he created is truly good. Love his sense of humor and his writing style.

Vike, if you don\'t like Ender\'s Game, I\'ll send you a mini...

I recommend NOT to read:

The short story \"Guts\" from the book \"Haunted\", author is Chuck Palahniuk.

The first story I felt so sick afterwards that....:possessed::possessed:

it really takes guts to read it...:possessed:

Yes, the Marcus Didius Falco detective series by Lindsey Davis is great! You might also try Martha Grimes\' Det. Inspector Jury series (first book is \"The Man with a Load of Mischief). I like both of these because they have a bit of humor thrown in. Also, you must not forget Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser books by Fritz Leiber!!

And there is some really good children\'s literature today....Artemis Fowl and as someone mentioned, Skullduggery Pleasant!

Most Michael Crichton books (Timeline and Prey are my favorites)
The Odyssey (make sure it\'s the epic poem version)
Harry Potter. Because it\'s Harry Potter.

as generul poleaxe mentioned dirty books:twisted:, but no authors, i think henry miller is one of the best...
tropic of cancer, and tropic of capricorn or sexus, nexus, and plexus are great...
they are erotic, irreverent, and adventurous...great stories of life in nyc and paris in the 30\'s...

for something a little more girly, his lover anais nin is also good...

cheers

R.A.Salvatore has some pretty good books aside from his WoTC \"Drizzt\" novels.
Michael Morecock\'s Elric saga, hell anything from Morecock.
Jeff Mariotte has written some fine books, alot of stuff for the Buffy/Angel fans.
The Preacher graphic novels are awesome. I read the comic as it came out monthly. Just some awesome tonge in cheek, culture searing, politically incorrect fun.

Thanks for the tip!

+ 1! ;) It\'s one of my favourite books of all time! But it was a long long while ago I read it.

I think I\'ve read Ender\'s Game about 200 times. I haven\'t got it memorized, but I can probably re-tell the story pretty accurately, anyway.

It is a favourite of most people I\'ve recommended it to. And there have been a lot.

Please read: J. D. Salinger\'s \"The Catcher in the Rye\".

With the benefit of not having to put up with Kevin Costner :D

Did they make it into a movie with Mr. Costner? Oh no!

By the way, Fyodor Dostoevsky\'s \"Crime and Punishment\" was one of the best books I ever read. What an intense story!

Again I\'m recommending Martin Zuzack\'s \"The Book Thief\" Superb story.

Jane Eyre Charlotte Bronte
The Scarlet Letter and anything else by Nathanial Hawthorne.

I\'d seriously recommend Jim Butcher\'s Dresden Files series. Not heavyweight but very enjoyable.

Tony Hillerman\'s Books of the Navaho Tribal Policemen Joe Leaphorn & Jim Chee.

Jeffery Deaver\'s Lincoln Rhyme books

J.M.Sansom\'s Dissolution, Dark Fire, Sovereign and Revelation. Mystery Stories set in the reign of Henry VIII, quite entertaining.

I\'ve recently finished The Yiddish Policeman\'s Union an unusual \"aletered history\" perspective. Difficult to follow unless you have some understanding of Jewish/Yiddish terms and references.

There\'s probably 100\'s more I could recommend..............BUT the one author no-one has mentioned:
Mary Gentle \"Golden Witchbreed & GRUNTS are her two greatest works. Avoid like the plague \"ASH\" 1200 pages and I gave up after 300 pages.
