now THAT\'S a chaos dragon....

I\'d hate to see what those tentacles get up to on a Slaaneshi version of this guy.

Oh the horrors of anime :p

I was directed to this sight from the concept art board. its refreshing to read what people think of my work, they\'re not usually up-front about it in my own threads. I actually agree with these comments, but at the same time It would seem I accomplished what I set out to do. I wanted something closer to the artwork, especially emulating john blanche. I wanted it to be a massive spawn, and I wanted it to be something new. A mixed bag of reviews, but I\'ll take honesty anyday.

Hello, pox! Well, you certainly achieved your goal, it does indeed look like a massive spawn. And it\'s certainly a more fitting chaos dragon than that Galrauch (sp?) thing that GW produces. But, I have to agree with the \'too busy\' comments here. It\'s a tricky business, sometimes to exagerrate particular details and to understate the quantity of details. Spectacular skill though!

Pox why did you have to post.. now I sound like I\'m sucking up. lol

I think it\'s awesome! But not as the main focalpoint - it\'s too busy for that I agree. I more see it in a diorama next to the hero who\'s going to try to slay it. It both acts as an enemy and to set a scene and mood. It\'s like both a creature and terrain.. eh. that didn\'t sound right. But it works as a terrifying backdrop for something else - even a chaos army.

What I picture, the scene that popped into my head:

First you see the hero in a waiting stance preferably from the behind standing on a small hill. Then you see some distance away the chaotic darkness of dragon in front of him/her. You can then start looking for details in the chaos as you still have the hero as the calm centerpoint.

i like it cause...

i like it cause....well, from my current D&D campaign using the Far Realm...that creature is actually tame compared to some of the messed up stuff that comes from the Far Realm.

It would fit perfectly since it WOULD be that messy, etc.

I think it fits perfectly in my current campaign :)

I rather like it myself. I think the cluttered appearance is not helped by the fact that all of it is one flat colour right now; painted appropriately I think it\'ll be stunning. The separate chaosy bits all merging to one are so cool! Teeth everywhere :D

I love it! At first I too was botherd by a lack of focus and not being able to tell what I was looking at. But after thinking about it...that is exactly what chaos is all about! Read any of the chaos fluff about the northern wastes and how they mutate everyting into an alien landscape. An ancient dragon mutated over a few milleneum! It\'s perfect!!!:D:D

I love it... I love that I can\'t look at all of it at once and understand what my eyes are seeing. So many times I\'ve seen chaos this and chaos that only to find a mildly annoyed ferret with a horn stuck on it.

Sure, it may be more chaos than dragon but I\'m glad... there are too many out there which are more dragon than chaos.

Rock on!

Hahaha, that\'s an awesome line. I may have to add that to my sig as I see seems to be a trend around here (quoting other members).

then a thousand hrs to paint (if i had to paint it:bouncy:

funny about the far-realms D&D stuff, thats always been a huge inspiration, I love the artwork from various books about the far realms.

For me, it was about the books of chaos when they came out, and the storm of chaos campaign books. in some of the artwork, their are these HUGE beasts in the background, pure chaos-spawn things. I always liked the lovecraft-thing beyond the stars ideas, and the john blanche chaos artwork. there\'s always the core figure, (which often gets turned into mini\'s,) and then all this STUFF, just tons of bits and tentacles. I wanted something like that.
I can see how I went too far, and how I have lost that \"core\" figure, the central point other posters have mentioned. but as I sculpted it, I kept coming back to a massive \"thing\" from far north, sleeping close to the chaos gates, who has returned for some fell reason. I probably should have just made a giant spawn, but the \"dragon\" persona gave it just enough cohesiveness, a good base for what was going to be mutated.
certainly for the rest of the army, I\'ll pull back the spawn aspect, but there will be figures that I push it even further.

I would do a diorama, with the hero about to slay it, but its just too big. the diorama would have to be 4\'x4\', haha. the dragon is the size of a reaver titan.

all of these comments are really shaping my decisions on how to paint it. I agree with the general consensus that the dragon itself needs highlighting, and all the chaos bits downplayed. I\'m still working out how to paint it, so we shall see.

@POX: welcome to the forums and thank you for accepting criticism so graciously. (See Sven: That\'s how to suck up! :D)

I\'m not backing down from my comments, I do think you have superb skill & dedication to produce a piece of work like that.
Having thought about it some more and discussing it with a couple of friends yesterday, it strikes me that your sculpture is one of pieces that isn\'t going to photgraph well but will be a fantastic piece to view in reality.

I will only get better through criticism. I post my stuff on the internet for two reasons.
1. if someone likes it, its a quick boost to my ego, and a gradual boost to my self-esteem.
2. if they don\'t like it, and can articulate WHY they don\'t like it, then I learn and adapt. through the observations of others, I see the sculpture in a different light. if the over-all perception doesn\'t match what I was going for, this tells me I need to improve.
I learn more from mistakes, and I become a better artist through being challenged. I DO NOT become a better artist through having my ego stroked. what I loved most about this thread, was I didn\'t start it. no one that posted knew I would eventually see it, so I got a true glimpse of what people thought of it. It\'s why I posted it on concept art in the first place, I wanted more then a pat on the back.

as a side note, I found every post informative, and quite complimentary. my skill in sculpting in general was given high marks, as was my dedication. If I was to pin-point my weakest area, its in the design and concept phase. I had no pictures to work from, just a vague idea of how I wanted it to look. the posts here confirmed that, and has had a direct impact on my overall approach to sculpting. I have decided to go back to school, in order to get a broader skill set.(specifically drawing and design.)in general, I am focusing more on the design half of the sculpting process.

oh, and the dragon does look pretty cool in person.

Sweet baby Jebus! Monster!
I am somehow gripped by that inexplicable desire to paint when I see those organic Chaos thingies... Might be fun, although I certainly wouldn\'t do the sculpt justice.

And that orc... \"must be a bitch to paint\" was my first thought... heh.

I don\'t think you even COULD paint it in a 1000 years! lol

It\'s an impressive work of art, without doubt! I agree that it lacks a distinct focal point, but that\'s chaos for you. I\'m not painting it so I\'ll just enjoy it for what it is! And there\'s lots to enjoy on that beast. :)

Talk about riding the fence on this one...

I\'m with Sanjay. I see the beauty of this, but I can also see that it is too busy.

But chaos is suppose to be like this.

But it would be a b**itch to paint.

But I would buy it and paint it. If it was possible to caste.

???

My thought was that if this was painted in a limited pallet with each of the detail areas embellished some, it should turn out fantastic. Most of this creation is skin, bone (teeth), and wings. That says to me it will have three main colors. As long as those colors are subdued (and done well) then the other parts, when contrasted will pop, and you\'ll have a few things that will suck your eye in.

I think of it kind of like the close encounters space ship that was posted. As a whole, it looks very complete. But when you break it down and study individual parts, you can enjoy even more different design elements. Since it is not yet presented as complete, we can not see it as a whole, and the photos only give us some of the elements.

With all its myriad of detail it sort of reminds me of Rococo art. Not that I could see it painted up all in white, gold leaf and pale pastels. Hmmmm... Wait a minute. maybe I could! At least it would be quite different

Of course with my luck, while I was trying to paint it, I\'d drop it. Then instead of Rococo, it would be Baroque :duh:

Thank you, thank you. I\'ll be here all week. Don\'t forget to tip the wait staff. And try the veal :D
