NthPower - WIP log

I thought I'd start a WIP log to help me stay motivated, be less lazy and hopefully become a better painter.

I usually paint 28mm fantasy/sci-fi minis, but lately have been painting minis for my boardgames. They've been strictly tabletop quality, but I'd like to put out some better quality painting.

For my first WIP, I thought I would do something different and paint a 54mm historical fig. I feel as if my painting skills have plateaued, so I thought maybe this might help.

Here's how much I have done so far. I think his face is almost done. Arms and legs are getting there slowly. Hopefully I can get some extra time this weekend.

Looks good so far. I like the skin tone you've chosen. Lately, when I'm about finished with the face, I will go back in with a very thin red glaze (GW's red glaze further thinned with water) to add a bit of color to the cheeks and tip of the nose. It adds more life to the figure.

On a side note, I see you located in Southern California. Which part? There are several painting groups in the area that you might want to check out. In Burbank is the LA Miniaturist Society. They've got a lot of people doing vehicles (ships, planes, cars, etc) but also a decent figure contingent. In La Palma is SCAHMS which is a group really focused on miniature figure painting. They do a show once a year which is definitely worth checking out. Although it's late notice, this Saturday they're doing an all day workshop in place of their regular meeting. They'll have tables setup for a variety of demos. Here's the description:
"We plan to have some notable modelers on hand to help answer questions.
Work areas will include figure painting, vehicles, groundwork, airbrushing, painting flats and more!
Bring something to work on and have fun with us.
We will break for lunch, there are some good places nearby.
Cost is $10.00, kids free. This covers the cost of the room for the day.
Please join us, we'll have door prizes, refreshments and camaraderie with old friends and new friends!"

If you're able to make it, I'm sure it will be worth the trip. Hopefully I'll be there too.

@ Bailey: I read your article on skin tones and I'm using the Reaper Bronze triad. Good stuff.
Thanks for the info on the groups. I'm in Gardena, so not that far from La Palma actually. I'll try to make it, but might not be able to this week. Sounds like it should be fun! How often do they do these?

Glad you found it helpful!

I'm new to the group (just moved to the area a few months ago), but it looks like they may do this sort of thing once a year. We have regular meetings on the 2nd Saturday of the month from 10 am until about 1. People will bring their latest finished work or work in progress for a show and tell and to get feedback and advice from the other members. There's also a presentation either on modeling or a related topic. So even if you can't make it this weekend you should come to one of the regular meetings sometime.

Good call on the WIP change of scale and subject. You'll grow in leaps and bounds with this approach :)

Things are slow going, but getting there. I've been getting sidetracked with other stuff.
I think the armor is getting close to being done, but still needs some work. The pic makes it look a little duller than it is, but it still needs to be brightened up.
After that, I'll move on to the leather.

For sure you've got it covered, up the midtones, reduce the shadow and keep that lovely 'texture' to the surface...finally, don't get sidetracked unless she's worth it ;)
