Oceaning Basing

I just recently decided to do a Skarre Themed Cryx army and wanted to do the basing as a beach landing, middle of the ocean type of thing. I can get everything but the color of the water under the water effect down.

I don't know if it says anywhere what color the water is in the Broken Coast, and I am having trouble getting the ocean colors down. I have been using greenstuff to create surf or waves and I think it looks good, but I could use any ideas.

I figured I would go and ask where the well-to-do-miniature painters are so does anyone have any info I could use please?

Well, what colors have you tried thus far? Ocean/beaches vary around the world. Here on the Gulf, we have a lot of silt and sand in the water so many times it's blue-green-brown color. When I lived in California, many times the beaches were the same but every once in awhile the water would be pretty clear and it was more blue-green and very little brown. And at Laguna, sometimes the water was crystal clear blue.

I would suggest looking at beach photos on the interwebz and see if you find something you like. Looking at the real thing can help a lot.

On water effects, you can not only paint the colors underneath but I believe you can add a couple of drops of food coloring to the mix to help get the colors you want.

I think I was looking for a bright blue water maybe highlighted with white for the surf. Kind of a pacific island beach thing. Living in Florida I have not seen many beaches on the other side of the states.

That was one of my questions though. I can't find any info on what color the Broke Coast is in the Warmachine universe. I would assume it was a clear one with the lack of things that would polute the water besides the bodies of the people falling in it.

For info, you may want to try posting in one of the gaming forums and see if anyone has knowledge of what the Broke Coast would "look" like. But it sounds like you got it covered with Florida. lol! You have gorgeous beaches on one side, murky swamp in other places.

Here in southeast Texas we've got murky swamp and huge mosquitoes down to a science. ;) Makes me glad I don't live in the Bayou.

Kats suggestion is a valid one....look up picks on the internet and research abit. And buy some water effect and experiment abit on some old bases.

The Vallejo water effects give a nice textured and colored rough water effect. I've use it for basing on figures ranging from a water elemental, pirates, to Uncharted Seas and other boats. Doing a light white drybrush on the texture does some nice wave break effects as well.

I actually tried basing it with some GW Water Effect (Only Stuff Available) and I think it came out very nice. A Devlan Mud wash added the dirty water look I was hoping for. Thank you all for the help.
