Odd question...getting rid of stuff

I\'m finding that in order to support my habit (addiction), I may have to sell some of my minis to purchase others.

I just have the hardest time getting rid of stuff. When I finally have pics of my room, you\'ll see what I mean.

Anyone else have this problem?

For instance...I have the Ral Partha Slave Auction set, opened but mint condition, and I always look at that as \"I don\'t want to sell it, but when am I going to paint it?\"

Or I have a couple of older painted GW dwarves that my ex-wife and I did. They look nice, but they might help me support my purchase of other minis. Yet, losing one that you painted is like losing a child.

How do you professional painters do it?

It gets kind of depressing.

I\'m just rambling, but I\'d like to hear some of your comments.

You have the slace auction?

I wrote a month long campain based on that set and I got an email saying they where sold out after I tried to purchase it. If I had the money I\'d buy it.
As far as selling your painted mini\'s for profit so you can buy more, try buying mini\'s with the intention to paint and sell, instead of mini\'s you intended on keeping for yourself.

I don\'t know how they do it either....

But if I ever got to a level where I thought mine would sell, I\'d be buying more than one of the same mini, one to keep and one to sell.

Well recently, say in the last year or so, I have painted about 100 minis for other people and about 5 minis for me. That in itself isn\'t easy, but out of the 5 I have probably given away 2 or 3 or sold them. Some older ones I don\'t mind, as I obviously like the figure, so paintign a new one shouldn\'t be too bad, some day.
It just really sucks looking at my shelf, and seeing , well, nothing....

I have had the same problem, but the simple accumulation on minis was getting out of control. After my first couple of ebay sales went well, I sort of got into the swing and now have a good time selling some of the accumulated flotsam and jetsum.

I have started to pick figures to paint that I think I can sell and not so much out of what I want to keep. It is an excellent way to build a little nest egg of funds so that when you see that mini you gotta have no matter the cost, you can afford to buy it then and there. It is also gratifying to get a really good price for something you painted, sort of validates this thing for me and made me see that there is a way to feed my mini addiction without either breking the bank or reorting to burglary and theft!

Yeah, good call on that! A few sales allows me to order more minis as well as maybe spend a day at the Grand Tournament in Calgary Must paint a few more to sell yet, then I can hit the Sentry Box and by stuff too

It\'s the exact opposite for me... I\'d like to be doing a few models for commission but instead I have to do a ton to play in the GT since I already spent the $175 for the tickets So many left and so little time to paint...

Now 3 days less since I need 3 fillings and my wisdom teeth to come out in the next couple weeks. I think I might tell them to bugger off until I get a cavity on the wisdom teeth, since I really don\'t want to be doped up on the long weekend I planned on binge painting/drinking!

I find that if I know that a model is being painted for sale when I start it, it\'s far less painful letting it go. Still doesn\'t stop me packaging the model up with a tear in my eye though.

I have 3 guys that I would have a hard time getting rid of. The rule at the house now stands. I get one mini for every 5 I paint. All painted minis are reserved to a flat shelf of 1\' x 2\'. Between the cats and the wife that is all the room I get. Once the shelf gets full minis started going away.

Don\'t. I did this and ended up in extreme pain every time I ate. Oh, and anything with sugar was completely out.

Made it more painful and difficult for the dentist to remove, and on one I ended up with dry socket (even more pain and less able to eat or tolerate heat/cold).

As for being drugged up, all I had to deal with was some numb gums for a while and taking some antibiotics. Other than that, I could do whatever I wanted.

I still called in to work though.

Back on topic... I have a VERY hard time even giving things away. I\'ve lost now three pictures I\'ve drawn, and only one do I have a picture of. The other three, two were given to now-ex boyfriends and one was done specifically for one of the ex\'s brother.

Minis? I don\'t know if I could stand selling or giving away any of my precious metal..

I\'d never be able to let any go away that I\'ve painted for myself, even my crappy older minis. I think though, that if I was painting it for someone else it wouldnt be as bad if I took a lot of pictures of it. What i worry about, is that here in San francisco, all it takes is one medium earthquake, and all my mini\'s are destroyed. I really have to make something to protect them. any ideas?

So far I have only sold one mini.
It is one I got for free and painted intending to sell, and even then it was hard to do. I currently have my Warmaster stuff on ebay and I will be very sad to see it go even though I don\'t play Warmaster or have any other warmaster stuff (bought it by mistake thinking it was warhammer).
I aint selling my Epic space hulk (or the real one for that matter) no matter what!
Same goes for my CMON competition pieces - although I have another amazon I plan to paint and sell, but I\'m keeping my working girl.

The only mini I\'ve painted for sale was an Archaon and that wasn\'t painful because I bought him to sell. But I wouldn\'t really want to sell my dragons or my moon puppies..

You see some of what I\'m up against...I have a couple of dragons waiting to be painted (for a few years now), that end up going somewhere in my head as \"should I think about selling that?\", but I can never bring myself to.

The dragon from the Bridge of Sorrows set, which a friend had assembled for me using putty (before I knew what that was for-6 years ago or so), which has been broken twice due to cats/children. Absolutely beautiful piece, but I\'ve never gotten around to painting it.

Same with T\'Char, I assembled him a while ago before I ever started using putty and was cleaning flash using only a box cutter (Ugh! There\'s a memory from about 9 years ago). Again, beautiful mini, but I need to putty and clean it, then find time to paint it amongst my other few thousand minis.

But I collect minis for myself because I like them for myself, so the idea of getting rid of any is gutwrenching.

Doesn\'t help that occasionally I\'ll see someone else\'s painted mini on eBay and think I would really like that. Nothing terribly expensive, but it adds up.

Hence the conundrum.lol

johnboyjjb- Maybe I need the same kind of rule at my house! Unfortunately, I have an entire room for that stuff, and I\'ve already stated my lack of desire to get rid of anything...

Aryanum- I know how you feel...I gave some of the minis to my ex-wife when we divorced, but she gave them back since she knew how much I loved them.:bouncy:

Parting is such sweet sorrow...unless you keep it forever!

don\'t worry about it. I have a cupboard full of miniatures including a number of box set dragons that I\'ve not started on. The two you mentioned are a couple of kits that I also have. I finished painting T\'Char and the bridge of sorrows a few years back and the BoS suffered a direct hit from my mum who knocked it off the ledge it was displayed on. So I had to do a few repairs there.

However, If I see old Ral Partha dragons I generally try and buy them just because they are getting difficult to get hold of and so you have to get them where you can.

Unfortunately with Reaper and Rackham putting out some really nice stuff, not to mention Forgeworld and GW I\'m getting more and more stuff that I just havent had time to paint. I tend to put everything that I\'m not working on out of sight so that I can just concentrate on one thing at a time. If money gets tight I may have to think of selling some of my collection though.

Yes, I get very attached to minis - esp after I paint\'em - it\'s like a soul bond!

But I, psychotically, maintain that everything I buy will be \"for the game.\" And thus my conclusion (or response when people ask why I don\'t sell some) is: Why would I sell the game pieces and leave the game unplayable?

Sick aint it? Especially since I haven\'t had a proper game of any type in many many years.

T\'Char... the bane of my existance. He\'s been assembled, partially painted, and stripped about 6 or 7 times now.

I, too, collect those old RP dragons. Huma\'s Silver was the beast that took me a while to get a ahold of. Now I have two.

The GOOD news is I know T\'Char is now available from Iron Wind metals. I\'m actually considering getting another, so long as it\'s the all metal version.
