oistene's WIP - a mostly dead space

Yeah, I know, DR. I posed him on top of rocks and tubes to try to make it seem natural, but it was hard. He seems to hover over the rocks now, bothers me quite a bit. Might have a try with the knife, otherwise I just need to cover him in so much grime it doesn't show.

Great improvement. His left arm is still a bit rigid, but you could build up the base under it to make it look more like it's just lying there. Or hit it with some of your knife and green stuff skills.

Okay, managed to do a fair deal of work on the base tonight, enough to be ready to pop that monster onto it tomorrow. Here's a few of the steps, this is fairly simple work:

First, a nice wash of Agrax Earthshade. Hmm, need to buy more of that, I'm running out.

Then, base colors and a few drybrushes of the rocks.

Some green and purple washes to make it interesting, and some straw.

And finally, some UHU-blood and a little water effect. Now this need to dry up properly... need to neaten up the blood a little and add some more water, then it is done.

Thanks people... I can't resist doing *somthing* when I get a base that big, BAM. There's just too much room to leave it plain, besides, there's a prize for the challenge, so I want do a little extra to try to win that.

All right! Time for the final three! Saturday I took out the airbrush and tried to preshade a bit with it. It will be a learning curve, but it is already great help for basecoats - I spend too long on them, and use too much paint. The airbrush fixes that almost automatically (most of the time - one of the little guys got a bit of a heavy spray when I was tricked by the second color I used being a lot heavier than the first).

The little ones are brood hounds, and the big guy is the Howler. The Howler's a great model, super sculpt and it looks absolutely disgusting. I've tried to layer a few colors here, and was only semi-successful, but it made a good base for further shading.

This is where I am at now, done shading the Howler. He doesn't have that many details other than claws and boils, so this will be a relatively quick job, I assume a couple of sessions should do. I tried to make a pattern on his skin by placing large drops of thinned paint on him, and then wiping it off with a tissue. This made a spotty effect; I'm rather happy with of it turned out.

The Howler is looking fabulous oistene! With a few more finishing touches he'll definitely be ready to stomp across the battlefield.

Lol. That is the best gnome! Have you convinced your wife to let you put him in the garden?

Thanks Arch! The gnome actually belongs to my wife, the sun killed the color so she has asked me to repaint him. I'll take it as airbrush practice, plan is to paint it with AB only. Might have to bring out the brush to do the eyes, but I'll try AB first.

Always hated garden gnomes, but I would put this one into my garden if I had one xD.

I like the yelow/purpleish combo... do I see some light yellow-green on some areas (around mouth and under its hand) or is it the camera? because I think it is nice addition to the overall feeling...

That would be cool. The wife bought a bear that is by our front door. He is leaning on a sign that says, "wipe your paws". He has his leg bent and is staring at the garden gnome squished to the bottom of his foot.

Thanks all! Maenas, you're not wrong, but the effect comes from thin yellow paint over black primer. It's not really intended, but I like it, and the plan is to add a little more green to break up the detail more.

Diggs and Krule - Now that's a plan! Either that, or buy more of the zombie one (which I apparently also am repainting) and make him face the horde. I want that bear now, it would make a great partner for the gnome.

Haven't had the time to sit down for a proper session all week, however, I've managed to do a little every day and that is just as good. This is where I am at now:

I'm trying to mind the light here, like Tero suggested - you can probably not tell at all on this picture, since I decided that instead of making it zenithial, it is hitting his face at about 70 degrees and from the left. That bit is easy, but his flesh is hard to shade due to all the folds. I think I have to do another round and neaten it up. The problem is that it isn't always obvious to me how it should hit.
