OK, I have smoke, now what do I do with it?

I\'m in the same boat with you Kevin. Everyone raved about it (even at the hobby store). I get it, look at it, and wonder just what the hell to do with it now.
Gonna give it a go on some metalics and see what I get.

thats what i use it on
so far ive used smoke on
- gold to give it that weathered effect...on the shaman
- hair- used it as a wash over blond to give it that dirty look
- over brown clothing- makes the bottom look dirty...
basically if i cant figure out a color to use...i use smoke lol

Just use it as a wash on metallics for a really greasy, oily finish. Be warned, it\'s super-glossy, but matting down afterwards makes the metal look pretty knackered - very cool....

I\'ve not used the Tamaya smoke, but I have used the Vallejo smoke. I think they\'re pretty much the same, but the Tamaya is more gray in color whereas the Vallejo is brown.
Either way, when I use the Vallejo smoke, I thin the crap out of it and use it like a wash. Seemed to work really well on any warm tones (reds, browns, yellows, oranges, etc.), but looked like ass on cool tones (blues, lighter greens, etc.).
Is there really that much difference between Vallejo and Tamaya smoke? ???

Nope. Not the same at all. Very different. The Tamiya can best be described as enamel-like I think, almost like a dirty gloss varnish. It\'s wierd stuff.
use lots of water with it. is alcohol based hence the smell ,it does mix with water but dries really fast (spirit evapourating i guess) its quite good to build up washes over metals. and its a brown /black mix. it comes out a bit like when you havent shaken vallejos properly (like paint suspended in vaseline)

realy cool stuff, but a bit tricky to use at first. it is much thicker than vallejo smoke. Usually I paint very thin layer of it (kind of glaze) over metalic parts to give them a bit weathered look.

1. I thin it with water? (Magic wash better?)
2. Put it on in thin layers (like everything else). paint the shadows. Is it good for blacklining.
3. Clean my brush with the Tamaya cleaner. (Can I use my good brush or should I be using a \"junker\" due to the cleaner?)

1.... best to add a little winky bit of washing up liquid to the smoke/water mix as it really does help to break the surface tension and make glazing metals etc easier.
2.... Yes make sure you use thin layers. As for using it for blacklining, I would say not cos it can tend to dry a little shiny and its conistancy is not really suited to this kind of techinque IMO.
3... for cleaning my brushes I just use regular water. I make sure to thoroughly wash my brush and I do tend to use a older brush for applying tamiya\'s - I have a brush that I have set aside exculsively for the task.
