hi all, i thought id get your opinion on two of my latest posts:
orc brute#1
orc brute#2

the smoothness of my blending has been called in to question in the past, so i decided to give these guys the acid test and post big \'ol close-ups. i would really like some feedback on these fellas because i plan on doing a whole warband in a similar style.

which one is your favorite? what is your favorite part?

thanks

these were painted in metallics : GW chainmail base, shaded with boltgun metal, and hilighted with mitryl silver. the oxidation is a combination of metallics and ink washes. cracks were freehand with the metallics and black.

and yes, they do look good from any angle

thanks for the feedback so far guys, its always good to hear positive things from you (knock on wood :p ). i think im making headway, step by tiny, miniature sized step.

Wow! Great minis both. I though it was NMM. LOVE the fish on the first guy and the little lizard on the second. Great chracter in both and the eye n the second is a ncie touch. both 8.5, rounded up to a 9 :) You\'re improving loads, and your bases are wonderful as ever.

Nice wor with the metallics echoing the compliment you paid me.

Overall these guys look great. one thing maybe to glaze the skin slightly as some of the higlights appear a little grainy .
But this is nothing major and doesn\'t detract from the finishe job.
nice one

Well, I think they both look great. The lizard \"snack\" on the second is very nicely done. An inspiration to those of us stuck in the 4-5 range!

Pretty much like NMM, then! ;) It\'s a misconception that NMM only look good from a certain angle. Yes, it\'s a 2D technique, but not more so than any other shading/highlighting we do. If you can accept that the highlights on skin or a jacket or anything non-metallic is fixed to a certain spot then you can surely do the same with a metallic area, right? :]

Now... enough about that... Your orcs surely look good! I like the skin tone, the metallics (yes, I do... ;) ) and the details on the bases. All the little details on the orcs have been given nice striking colours so that they are easily noticed. Great work, alltogether! :)

The metal is well done....but the skin looks...dead. It needs some vividness to it. Either more contrast, or as suggested above, a rich glaze of color (maybe yellow?)

But, that is just a minor point...I\'d say these are both high 7\'s-low 8\'s...so I vote an 8 for both.

thanks guys, i really appreciate all the feedback!
i think the skin might look a bit flat because of the strange light i photographed them in (for the sake of the metallics), but either way ill attempt to add a bit more \"pop\" to them on the next few orcs, a glaze is definately in order - the skin is only 4 step as is.

the rackham figs have some great details, and it was a fun but long process to work out some sharp colors that werent too over the top.

im a bit surprized about the descrepancy between the scores, 6.8 to 7.6, is it really that big of a difference?

thanks for the advice all, keep up the good paint work.

I like them both, and a lot! The colour choice is perfect ,the tiniest particulars very well executed and the base is great (where did you fing those beautiful leaves??). What I don\'t like are the washings done around some rivets. It seems like you didn\'t thin down enough your inks. Gemstones could be better too, highlighting their lower part to pure white. And last thing: I bet you painted them on a black undercoat. Try someone on a white one, I think it fits better your clean style. Both 8,5 for me.

thanks for commenting 3 1 3 :D
those leaves are brass etched from the water foliage sprue made by hasslefree - fantastic stuff and friendly people.

- ill work on the rivits....a few more models and ill have it down.

for the undercoat i used a grey color; again, i think the lighting is affecting the look of the minis, next time ill try around with some different conditions.

p.s. i really like your orc warband! inspiring stuff!

finally

ok, at last, pics of the third and final brute from the squad - a lil R&F; i think hes better than the first, not as good as the second. tough to photograph too, on account of the sword. some things didnt work as wll as i would have liked (orc skin, and the photo isnt doing me any favors) but some things did (the piggy, and im getting MUCH faster at my metallics).

next up is an entire squad of x-bowmen i received for me#9. and ill be painting them all togeteher and posting them as a squad, to save time and space (thanks to my new flux capacitor). any tips you guys pass along will be of great help.

ive dubbed the warband \"the red handles.\"
link for vote pimpin\'

edit: note that i didnt \"properly\" photograph and edit these pics. i knew he wouldnt break my top 5, so i didnt even try. when i do the group shot ill make sure they\'re clean.

I really think that there is at least a point in the difference between the two. The second has nicer leather detail, the lizard is top notch, and the weathering on the sword is quite nice. The first looks a touch flat in comparison.
