DM - Milton Bradley put out one called Samurai for a while - bout the same time that they and GW got together with that thing that they both put out.
I thought that was called Shogun....but maybe it went through a name change.
I remember the game, as it was in the same vein as the AXIS AND ALLIES game, tons of little minis, decent sized board, complex rules.
I think they had one on the Roman empire for a while as well....
The game was originally released as SHOGUN, but due to some legal difficulties they rereleased it with the name SAMURAI SWORDS. I sold my copy on eBay. I think I got around $65 for it.
It is a great game. Well worth the play. I had this idea that I would paint the armies that came in it, but I\'ve just got too much other stuff to paint.
The minis were decent quality, and around 20mm I\'d guess.
It\'s not so much based on the minis though - minis represent different unit types, but not individuals, and you can\'t vary them.
The series was called \"Battlemasters\" by MB and included AXIS & ALLIES (wwII), CONQUEST OF THE EMPIRE (Rome) and FORTRESS AMERICA (Sci-Fi) - the paperwork in the games said there was one called BROADSIDE which had a model boat and minis of pirates, but I\'ve never actually seen one and don\'t know if it was ever produced.
I had all but FA, and sold all on eBay. It was hard to do, but I never played them and felt their value would be better realized as cash I could turn into minis.
