ORK Battlewagon WIP

Winter\'s not done with us yet up here in Minnesota so everything I had planned outside got cancelled, which means more time for the Wagon! My wife had her own projects she wanted to finish up that didn\'t include me so I had a lot of time to work on the battlewagon this weekend. It may not look like a lot got done but it\'s all small work, as you\'ll see in the pics today.

I finished the platform for the Kill Kannon (yeah) and decorated the gun up. I want to do something to the barrel too (orkify) but no sure what to do yet. Barbed wire might be part of it. I thought of hanging a sign, but that would get in the way of anything standing under it on the deck. maybe some kind of \"armor plating\" that wraps around the gun tube in a few places. I\'m just not sure. While I think about that I started work on the engine area.

Gotta have somewhere for the grot riggers to hang out right? MIght as well putt\'em where they\'ll do the most good. Angle iron, the drop plate from the front of the Land Raider, some bits from the bikes shoota housings, sprue and some scrap plasticard rounds out the grot riggers platform and makes the engine look a little more orky and less Imperial. I also put on some mudflaps, they might not stay, I\'m undecided. What do you folks think?

Ahhhh. The deff roller is the hardest part of this whole vehicle - well, not the hardest art, but the most labor intense. I suppose any type of circle or curved surface is tricky since most of the plastic we use is flat panels, and that usually works well for orks. The deff roller is more sophisticated as it\'s made up of many, curves panels and care needs to be taken so it looks \"right\". What ever that is...

Almost all of Sunday was used to design/assemble the roller up to this point. Did I mention that I have a tendency to agonize over nearly every decision and cut I do? This makes anything I do take three times longer. I also spent an hour punching out literally hundreds of rivets. Yeah - my hands are tired. Rivets are the surest sign of dedication to an ork modeler.

what are the magnets you use and where can they be purchased?

also, as for the rigger platform, why not use the grot from the shokk attack gun, and make it look as though hes hanging on for dear life!

Thanks rosac! The grot from the weirdboy is a great idea, I might have to pick him up for this - Would have cut him off there anyway....

Here\'s were the mags are hidden...

One of the parts containing the magnets is glued to the deck with a very (paper) thin sheet of styrene glued over it so the force isn\'t weakened so much and it paints over easy. The other part is glue into the frame for the big gun mount. The third part of the photo shows an in progress shot of the whole thing working together.

I don\'t want anything to look obviously like it\'s magnetized to hiding them is important to me - so it looks like magic! I can actually hold the entire model by the gun mount and it hold securely. As to where I got the magnets - different places really. I got a large lot off ebay, very small ones that I used for the big shoota mounts - I traded half for some larger ones my buddy got off ebay as well. Sooo. I guess ebay is a good place to look, search for neodyne magnets.

It\'s coming along beautifully, I must say.

About the mudflaps: I think they are a good idea as they turn something too Imperial a lot more orky, but I think they stick out a bit too stiffly. How about making them consist of two parts - one part that sits like the ones you have already mounted, but only sticks out 1/4 inch or so, and then another segment that hangs from the first? I know it\'ll take more time, but I think it might be worth it.

And I really love your work on the engine compartment.

Dude that new front roller is da shizzle! Much better, works really really well. The other one was nice but DUDE! This one says big, krushy, lo-tech, destructive and does the business in a kool Ork infused hammertime stylee!

Quick post (to keep it from falling off the first page, right?). I put in an hour last night. One hour. An entire hour. And produced this.

I\'m trying to figure out the easiest way to make the wider, flatter pyramid spikes that should adorn the roller plates.

Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions! I wish there was a grot manufacturer in the area. I\'ve got a ton of grots but not the really dynamic ones (flattened, crawling, etc.) and I don\'t have the funds to ebay willy nilly at the moment so I\'ll keep these in mind and try to get ahold of them in the future to add to the character if this beast.

Pyramid spikes hrm, best/easiest way I can think to do them is with some sculpting putty. Maybe you could make a one, let it cure, then make a mold out of some of the same putty (whatever you happen to use) then let that cure then you can start stuffing the mold with putty then pushing the bottom against the roller so the spike sticks then pull the mold away and repeat until it\'s covered in spikes. You may want to use a drop of super glue between the putty and roller. This could be more costly and time consuming than it\'s worth however.

There may be some pyramid spikey bits you could get from/find in the electrical, plumbing, cake decorating, automotive, arts and crafts or toy sections in local stores. I can\'t think of anything I remember seeing at the moment, but I\'m sure they\'re out there somewhere.

if you can get a cheap studded belt they have pyramid spikes that are easy to get off, plus theres loads of them! dunno if that helps though

I myself will have a hard time taking this thing with any seriousness until I primer it.

Now let me explain... I\'ve been wrestling with how to pull off the shallower, pyramid like spikes on the deff roller. (I started to assemble some bikes while I was hatching my ideas) I don\'t have the materials/skills right now to mold my own, although I might look into adding that ability in the future. I though a lot about MonkFish\'s suggestion about the studded belt pyramids and after looking at them, I couldn\'t find ones small enough. I spent lunch yesterday at the local mega-craft store and the closest I found were these.

Pretty, I know, and they don\'t actually come to a complete point, but I think the smallest ones will do. I can always knick up the edges to make them look like they were spiky but have been worn down after a multitude of victims. I\'ll have to primer this soon...lol

I-beam mincers to chew things up more. I\'ll be adding some chain wrapped around the roller as well - I think that\'ll be enough detail to keep da enemy mesmorized enough while I crush\'em good.

With the roller work almomst done, I moved on to fixing the end arms/attachment points. I moved the magnets to the sides of the struts and started building boxes aside the drivers compartment to meet them. I\'ll built new housings around the green parts too as they just aren\'t quite what I envisioned, not jjunky looking enough!

Aaaand here\'s how it sits now with the roller attached. I need to finish off the attachment points for both contact points, cap the ends of the roller axles, battle damage the roller surface and add some spiky/knifey bits to the ends of the roller. THEN I can force myself to finish the drivers compartment. Whew!

Did I mention I started those bikes?

How\'s this for motivation? My wife walks into the office, I\'m hunched over the workbench sanding some spikey bits. She takes a look at the deff roller and remarks..

Ok, that\'s is, there will be primer on this thing before the day is out. In a hurry, I finished the arms for the roller and all the myriad bits I\'m gonna put on it. Here\'s a group shot before primering...

I finished off the other details areas that need to be done before painting. there\'s a bunch of other little things like barbed wire, grots and bits I can put on later. I don\'t mind scraping a little paint for gluing. On to painting!

After primering up what I thought was enough chain, I looked at the pics and figured I could use a lot more chain on that roller. Here\'s I\'ve started blocking sections out with Mechrite Red.

Me think you should order a lot of this red paint . Looks great!. Construction question, though. I noticed that your Death-rolla is attached to the body with magnets. Am I correct? How well does it hold,?The rolla itself should be pretty heavy...

Thanks skeeve. Surprisingly the base coat of GW\'s Foundation paint covered well and took less than I thought it would. I\'m waiting for the courage to start the real red (GW\'s Scab/Gore/Blood Red combo) this week. I took a week off and started some ork bikers for a change of pace. BTW, I did buy and extra bottle of each red, just in case....

I did magnetize the roller (as well as the big gun and the big shootas). It holds fairly well, although if I pick the model up, it will swing down and the roller hangs from the magnets on a pivot point. It\'s heavy but the magents do hold - I have to pull it to get it to come off.

Magnets are stronger than they look, ones of decent size are capable of 1-2 pounds of force pretty easily.

One way to stop rotation (not that it\'s really a bad thing on the death roller, it can accomodate terrain at the moment ) is to use twice as many magnets. If you have a pair lying side by side with opposite polarities (so one with N facing up and the other with S facing up) then when you attach the magnets to the other side of the joint in the opposite manner they won\'t be able to rotate at all. The magnets\' force is unbalanced unless they\'re perfectly lined up.

Description kinda sucks, here\'s a crappy diagram that should do the trick:

Line up your magnets like that and they won\'t spin.

I\'m personally not a friend of Orks, but your Battlewagen is really a cool looking vehicle.
The roller-thingy looks VERY orky and menacing ( at least AFTER priming ).
Really wanna see this one painted!

I know this isn\'t what you guys would want to see in an update but it\'s where I\'m at. Things are slow going since it\'s summer (finally) here in the northern US, although I did get a chance to sit down and start slapping some more paint down.

I\'ve gotten a majority of the red areas blocked out and done. Blocked in white where I\'ll be doing checkers with a micropen. Started base painting the metallic areas with black/bolt gun mix going up through bolt gun. The reds are the standard GW progression, the scab red applied with a brush (over the Mecharite Foudnation) and put the rest on with a sponge technique as to enhance dirty/worn out effect, but I didn\'t go all the way through the blood red as I\'ll save that for the highlighting after weathering.

This is my thought process for painting this beast. I\'ll paint it in somewhat \"new\" condition and not worry so much about painting in all the dirty and grime early. The paint job will be \"fresh\" and then I\'ll grease/grime/rust it up so all the underlying paint is actually under the crud. When that\'s all said and done I\'ll go back and do any highlighting and bringing the colors up to where I need them before sealing it.

The deff roller is in sad shape as you can see below. The glue I used didn\'t quite take enough so the plates are falling off. I\'ll most likely remove them all, scratch the pvc pipe up real good, maybe even drill small holes for the epoxy (which is what I\'ll use next time to hold onto. Lessen learned. Regular model glue doesn\'t hold to pvc.

@monkfish - I\'d love to do the squashed grot but I don\'t have one. Maybe by the time I get to the roller something will happen...

I\'ve been following this thread with interest and was inspired to start building my own battlewagon along similar lines (hope you don\'t mind).

I\'m gutted that the pipe hasn\'t worked. I didn\'t have a pipe anyway, so what I did was find a shower bottle of the right diameter and wrap some thin plasticard around it. I taped the first sheet in place and then added further thin sheets around this, gluing them in place with superglue. This produced a laminated cylinder. The bottle then slid right out and I had a roller of the exact diameter I wanted. Thought this might solve your problem? Thanks for the inspirational WIP!

Thanks for watching, Biggest. I\'m frustarted at the rolloer too but I haven\'t given up hope. and feel free to loot what ever you want from this - it\'s the orky way!
