Yes, you are right, from WWI through WWII, The Germans had a version of the more regular allies Mills fragmentation grenade (The one\'s you normally see, that are reminiscent of pineapples), which was stick shaped.
To arm the grenade though (At least in the version I know of), a cap had to be unscrewed from the base of the stick - which I imagine took a great deal longer than simply pulling a pin.
