Ork Wartruck = Warbuggy

First of all I\'d like to introduce myself as I\'m new to the forums. I\'ve been painting for some 5 years, mostly 40k minis with some Fantasy minis thrown in for variety. I recently moved to the UK to study and after all the hassle of settling in and a 2 month break from painting I\'ve picked up my brushes again!

Now on to the mini. It\'s one of these things you do just to prove that an old mini can be of some use. When the new Ork Wartruck was released my local GW was selling the old model at 50% discount. Admitedly it was awfull as a wartruck, especially compared to the new model so I thought it would make a god warbuggy with some conversion work...

At this point I\'d like to add that the fact that I\'m quite obsesed with servo skulls played some part in this conversion. In fact when someone comented that I have attached servo skulls in alla kinds of minis, my reply was: \"Well I haven\'t used them in a Tyranid conversion...yet\" :D

Anyway back to the topic: The idea is that an Ork Mek got hold of an old Wartruck but he couldn\'t ride it as it was because the other Boys with the new shiny trucks would make laugh at him. Frustrated as he was, one day he saw a dissoriented servo skull flying around in a battlefield after a large battle. He grabbed the \"umie skull robot fing\" locked himself in his shed and after \"lots a days\":

Then all I have to do was paint it... Painting started in Greece and was completed yesterday in London. :D

I don\'t know the rules or what either the old or new models look like (the Wartruck I have is the old open top one from when the rules were: it could carry as many models as you could fit in/on it), but this looks pretty cool.

And the finished thing:

As it\'s nearing completion any suggestions for last minute changes before varnishing as well as your oppinions, criticism etc will be greatly appreciated.

I broke it down to three posts for ease of viewing. If you think one large post would be better please tell me and I\'ll keep it in mind for future posts.

P.S. The funny thing is that I don\'t play Orks! :D

Edit: If you\'d like any pics at a larger size just ask and I\'ll add links.

I\'m glad you like it Gilvan Blight. I quite enjoyed painting it though I\'d like to paint some more single minis now before returning to vehicles.

The truck itself looks quite good to my eye, but the orks themselfs look alittle...flat? Maybe a layer or two of highlights to the skin?

Is there going to be someone in the back to fire that pintel mounted gun? Or is that what the chained Servo-Skull is doing?

Sadly every time I try to bring up the highlights more in Orks the result is too chalky. I guess you\'ll have to wait till my painting skills improve.

Gilvan Blight: The looted Servo Skull is operating the gun. It\'s other function is anoying every Tech-Priest or Techmarine who happens to see it. :innocent:

Thanks guys. You realy keep me motivated to paint more!

One little question: Should I just varnish it and call it a day or should I weather it some more? And if so you have any ideas for weathering? ???

Looks good to me. As for choosing to weather it further I guess my question is \"Are you gaming with these mini\'s?\". If the answer is yes then i would just up and do another model refining what you learned from this one and trying further techniques on the next model you have to do. If you\'re playing 40k you\'ll need a bunch anyway.

If it\'s just for display then I would say go for it and have some fun beating it up some more. As for techiniques I would reccomend trying some of the MiG pigments or artists chalks & Pastels ground up and distributed on the model using different techniques. I am very new to using that stuff and haven\'t actually secured any MiG stuff myself but people here will know the score on that stuff.

Also I have heard very good things about the new forge world armor detailing book, but have no first hand knowledge of it.

Actually I built this as a display model since I don\'t play Orks. I recently finished my gaming army (marines) so now I\'m just painting any mini I fancy. :)

I thought of using MiG pigments myself and the only thing that discourages from doing so is the fact that I forgot to bring my (brand new and unused) MiG pigments with me when I moved to the UK. So now I\'ll have to buy them again and they\'ll remind me of my stupid mistake every time I use them...

On a more general note I thought a bit about what kind of weathering I\'d like and I came up with the idea of weathering the bottom half of the vehicle. The concept is that it\'s used on dusty roads so the underside, wheels etc get quite dusty. The aim would be to introduce some variation on a quite uniform looking model. However it\'s only an idea and I don\'t know how it will look after it\'s finished. If anybody has any pics of vehicles weathered this way please share as they could help me decide whether to go on that direction or not. Cheers!
