Osl test mini

Meet Tristan the loremistress. Hobbies: Shopping, clothes and kicking arse in dungeons:

I\'m using her to test out a few techniques, and would appreciate some feedback and tips. I\'m pretty happy with the pale skin and the pink hair. I\'m less thrilled with my efforts with the horse head (was going for an interior glow look), and I\'d like to try some osl with the torch, but I\'m unsure how to start. I think that the closest light would be yellow-white, shading to orange-red? How far should it go? And is it going to look bloody odd when the rest of her is painted with zenithal lighting?

If she\'s a dungeoness and that tourch is the only light source (Providing the dungeon walls ar not damp or made of a reflective material) then I myself would be very harsh with the shadows on her right, something like FIRE !!!!!!! By Shawn R. L. which I\'m sure your familiar with (If i knew how to link CMoN entries I would). Which would leave her right side a blend of grey/brown at best. Atleast thats how I would envisage her.

Overall I think this looks really good so far - the skirt and top are nicely done (particularly the skirt) and the skintones are great.

That\'s very hard to pull off and personally I\'d go for it on a larger canvas. I\'m not sure but my gut feeling is it\'s harder to get this to \'read\' right on something this tiny.

If you\'re going for just some cast light from the torch, with the figure otherwise lit by natural light, then I\'d try doing some careful glazing with yellow (only yellow) then maybe add some very subtle shading on the opposite side to where this light falls.

To get the angle of illumination right, try viewing the figure from the angle of the torchflame (hold it up to your eye with the torch very close).

Also, decide on how far from the lightsource you want the light to fall off to zero and keep that firmly in mind before you start.

Two things come to mind when I look at this model regarding the horse head.
1: At least a small amount of glow should radiate on to the top of the staff and blend down the shaft. The line is a bit abrupt there.
2: Perhaps take a few of the blue areas (horses nose, crest on back) to a darker shade of blue or even grey/black to further emphasize the inner glow of the staff. Thsi hightened contrast might help convince the eye a bit more.

Once again, you already have a really nice looking model here. I\'m just trying to offer some point i noticed that might help a bit.

Thanks for the replies- just the kind of feedback I was after!

@veggiemanuk: Yep, ordinarily you\'d probably be right. However, in this case she\'s a dumping ground for me to practice a few things (fire, osl, skin, unusual hair colour, glowy horse), and if half of her was faded out I wouldn\'t be able to see it! But it\'s a good point and something I\'d like to try on another mini.

@Einion: Thanks! I had a bit of trouble with the skirt, actually. My RPP blood red is a bit elderly, and for a while everything was looking horribly gritty! The skin is attempt #2- the first time I accidentally made all the shadows too red, then I went and got cloth and hair colour all over it, so I had to start over. \'Tain\'t perfect, but I know how it should work now.

I think you\'re probably right about the horse-head. I was trying a similar effect to the flames here, by EricJ, but I haven\'t quite pulled it off. Maybe pez5767 is right, and it needs to be darker at the extremities.

With the osl, I came up with an idea to help decide the limit of the light effect:

Anything inside the red circle would be osl, anything outside would be unaffected. I shall give it a try and see what happens. I think the black hair is going to be the biggest problem...

@pez5767: Thanks, I was after some constructive criticism! You\'re right about the blue glow on the staff that should be there- I was reluctant to put it in until I was sure the horse-head was going to stay blue and glowy. And I think you\'re right about it needing darker parts too. I might try with a different blue and see if that helps as well.

You are very welcome... I hope it helps. I just tried a similar glowy effect on a large batch of commission models. (GW SM plasma guns)

Can\'t wait to see the osl, I too am at the point that I want to try dabbling with something like what you have going here. Talking about it and bouncing ideas around always helps.

Exactly the type of thing I was going to suggest (in fact I was going to draw a circle on the photo, although larger than this) if you needed help in visualising it - imagining a sphere with the centre as the torch.

@Einion: Great minds think alike!

I was wondering whether to make it bigger, actually. Would be quite cool to have the light hitting the side of her face. This effort was mainly for demonstration purposes. For some reason I was having great trouble getting PS to draw a simple circle. It kept filling it in for me. This was a mutually agreeable compromise!

Y\'know, I\'ve just realised that she needs eyebrows...
