P3 paints?

Recently i have heard alot about p3 paints and how \"Amazing\" they are.

What makes them so special /different to other paints such as Gw\'S or vallejo?

How much do they cost each or can you only get them in sets?

How good is the range of colours ?

And finaly where can i get themin the uk?

P3 paints are formulated with a couple of changes from your normal GW, Reaper or V paints. They are most similar to the new GW foundation paints (I personally think the Foundation paints are pretty much a direct rip off).

These change are more pigment in a liquid form. This gives you much better coverage then average acrylics. Meaning that you can paint white over black with just a couple of coats. Green over white, the same. They have also added a blending agent which is supposed to make them blend better. I didn\'t notice much improvement here. I did notice that they make excellent washes though. They don\'t leave that \'ring\' you often get with GW paints.

As for selection, not quite sure if they are all out yet, but the full set will be 72 colours. Last I went shopping they were avaliable in sets of 6 based on the Warmachine colours. You could also buy them individually. The price was the same both ways, about 3USD each.

At the moment its only fraction boxsets, but you can always pick a range of colours you like best. I.e do you like reds, blues, dark colours? Thats what I did, and now I have 4 boxes of them.

*EDIT* Diddylemon: I got mine from Travelling Man, its a chain outlet so you may have one in your area, if not try Forbidden planet, as they have them in.

The P3 paints are sold one of two ways: single colors as of April and Boxed sets.
They are similar to the old GW paints from the 80s.

The bottles are 19ml which is the most you get for the price (3 bucks a bottle).

The paint is great stuff, the only fault I can find is the fact I alrady have heavily invested in VMC and VGC.

Thier colors are a mix of vivid cartoon colors with nice Earthtone Browns and Green. The best part is they put out the old Flesh wash that GW use to produce back in the day.

Definately a fan of them here, at least enough that I\'m going to extend those I have with more of their range to try out.

Just finished my first mini with them, I only testing the waters so to speak and not being that worried about the end product, but did find I finished a good bit faster than I expected with decent results, the amount they can be thinned and hold coverage is astounding in some cases (once I even filled the well entirely with medium and the normal amount of paint I use with GW colours and it still had more coverage than I was aiming for!)

Anyway here\'s what I said elsewhere:

Well, I\'ve got to using my P3s a little now, black, white and the entire green and purple/pink range, and I\'ve been very impressed thus far. Coverage on some of the colours is simply astounding (Carnal pink for example, a light shade, especially so). This means they can be thinned a hell of a lot more than citadel paints leading to smoother coverage, I also believe the paints themselves to be slightly smoother naturally. I\'ve found myself adding two or even three times as much medium to get things as thin as I would like (my technique invloves very thin paints using the transparency to blend). This can be a negative as well though, it does make smooth transitions harder if the colour you\'re layering is a few steps away from the one below. (as an example I had to add in an extra couple of steps when layering pink with less stark differences between layers)

Biggest negative would have to be the satin finish they produce, easily solved by a quick spray of dullcoat but some don\'t have matt varnish and when working with them it can occasionally be difficult to just just how smooth transitions are, inperfections that become apparent when matt spray is used. Also due to the need to thin so much I have noticed a little separation, easily solved with a swish of the brush though. Slight gripe in that some colours/highlights are very close together, whilst the next step is a large jump. (For example Murdrous Magenta and Sanguine highlight are very similar, leaving a very large gap to carnal pink) makes the range seem a little more limited, but just takes a bit more mixing.

All in all I believe their nature requires a slightly different approach and technique so they may take some getting used to by those like myself heavily set in their ways, but I\'m of the opinion that they do perhaps have the edge of GW and Vallejo. Certainly even with these issues and my unfamiliarity with the range my first attempt produced comparable results in blending transition and improved smoothness of coverage.

And to answer bobert, I\'d say yes, I much prefer the p3 white to any other I\'ve tried so far.

I picked up a couple of packs of these just today and did a bit of colour basing. While I\'m no expert, they do seem nice- smooth, even coverage and good strong pigments (over a grey primer). This is compared to the GW and Reaper paints I normally use. I\'m looking forward to seeing how well they hi-light and shade.

Oh %&*#

Be careful when shutting these babies. I just spilt a large amount of Midlund Flesh everywhere... :( :cussing:

Luckily I managed to \"rescue\" most of it using a teaspoon and a knife.

I think this may be a sign I\'ve done enough painting for today. I\'m off to the gym.

Aye, I\'ll second that, don\'t try and close them with one hand, black pot slipped out on me despositing half it\'s load a few inches away from all my minis (Had them out for reference) Gobbed the foot of one but was a hair\'s bredth away from junking the lot. Should have remembered from the old GW pots I had a habbit of doing that. *laughs*

Got mine from wargames workshop as well, will vouch for them too. :)

hi freak,

not sure what inks you used before, but i got GW and Vallejo and p3 compares well against them both. i think they have higher pigment content than GW and definatley need a good shake b4 use, but i would buy them again.
I tend to find GW a bit watery but that has it\'s uses. but for coverage i prefer the P3. They have a good flesh wash too.
