Paint Booth?

I\'m thinking of gettting a spray booth since winter is comming and I won\'t be able to spray my figures outside. I\'m woundering what others use or recomend. I saw a Paasche spray booth at the local hobby shop. Has anybody used one and are they any good?

I thought this was gonna be a \'phone booth\' reference, with a sniper hidden in a nearby building threatening to shoot you if you stop painting...

An interesting idea... That might be the only way I get any of my armies done! Now, where can i find myself a sniper....?

Are you talking about undercoating minis, if so then I use an old cardboard box turned on its side with the flaps opened. The base of the box forms the back wall.
I use something to elevate the mini off the floor and hey presto a spray booth.
What I use for elevation depends on the size of the mini but usually the top of the spray can is sufficient.
If you don\'t elevate it it tends to stick to the cardboard box, it is also easier to rotate the mini on so you can spray all areas.

I am in the process of trying to bodge one up using foamcore, extruded aluminium right-angle and an old computer fan. I will see if i can get a pic of it. I haven\'t actually tried it yet mind you:flip:

In the past I took a cardboard box and glued some \"shelves\" in it. Then I cut some cuts in the shelves so I could loop a rubber band on the shelves. I could stick several minis\' bases under the rubber band and take it outside to spray and then move back inside to let them dry propperly. It works in all but the coldest, dampest weather. (And this was in maine)

Now I try and do my filing/preping ahead of time, in early fall so that this doesn\'t become a problem.

If you can stand it. put a cardboard or foamcore shelf in front of an open window. Put a fan in the window to suck the fumes OUT of the house. (But it sucks the heat out as well.)

Make sure the screen is off of the window or you end up with a white circle on the black screen.

When I am airbrushing, I use a 20 inch box fan with a 20\" furnace filter taped to it. It pulls through a pegboard easel that I made, but you could set it on a table and let it pull across your work.

Always pull air either across your work or away from you. Don\'t blow on your work or blow in your direction. Seems obvious, but some people....

Priming minis - I generally just go out on the patio and spray. Minis on a paper plate. Only problem there is humidity.

BUT, when I got the airbrush going, then I am filling a room full of atomized latex acrylic. I don\'t care if it is non-toxic, I don\'t need any more damage to my lungs. (or to those in the rest of the house). When I was shooting shirts & helmates, it was not unusuall for the guns to be spraying for 4 hours almost non-stop. The high-teck easel was based on a commercial one I saw. It uses pegboard as a front and pulls everything into it - through a set of filters (20\" x 20\" square alergy filters) then out a box fan to the sides. I still wear a respirator when I am shooting anything more than a quick shirt.

That didn\'t make a bleeding bit of sense until I realised you were talking about Airbrushing. lol

I actually thought for a moment or two you were Taking gunshots at an item of clothing. Mental imaging system went completly into \"You What \" mode. lol

I almost had a piant booth. I got a put a few boxes together, one to use as a chamber the other as ductwork with a fan to blow everything out the window. It worked great unfortunalty my landlord saw it and freaked. I got a 2 hour lecture on blowing myself and his apartment to bits becasue of static electricity sparking the fumes. He\'s willing to let me have a \"profesional\" one that attaches to the dryer duct. I don\'t think it is that big of a deal but I don\'t own this place so I have to make the guy happy.

Klute\'s priming procedure

1.Hold mini in left hand by the base.
2.Put can of skull white in right hand(top removed) and shake like hell.
3.Walk into the front passage making sure our lass does\'nt know.
4.Open front door and stand in doorway facing out.
5.Hold up mini in left hand and spray it
6.Check door,coats and shoes for \"overspray\".
7.Put mini on mantle piece then scrub skull white from hands.
8.Shrug shoulders when our lass asks what the smell is.

Why are fans being mentioned,surely the smell is the best bit.

the little things...

its the little things that you dont want a fan for...like when priming a whole army or 2 with your friends..you breath in thru your nostril smelling that wonderful smell.
later in the day you decide to blow your nose and..MAGIC! its either black or white or whatever color you sprayed with...
ah....
then of course comes the wonderful part of getting it all out of your nose!

CAUTION

One caution on building your own. Use a spark proof/ explosion proof motor. The carrier in primers is quite flamable. Wouldn\'t want anyone to lose their eyebrows

I just kept an eye out on ebay for a while and finally picked one up fpr a reasonable price, Use it a TON! Good Luck!

I love this idea Mr. Finn....I have always wanted a spray booth, and this is definately the answer. Maybe a little duct tape around the seams.

How do you power up the computer fan? And is one fan going to give you enough air flow to \'suck\' out the paint fumes.

And howsabout that filter? what are your ideas there? Why do I have so many questions? Are they ever going to stop?
