Paint not adhering to resin?

I recently bought some lovely Forgeworld products, and spent time cleaning them up (not as bad as I imagined!), gave them a clean with dish detergent and warm water and a light scrub with a toothbrush.

I tried to undercoat them with Vallejo flat white paint, and the paint will not adhere to the surface. It beads like an oil-water interaction. I dont have a specific primer, but I havent had this problem with resin products (mostly Battlefront) before.

Has anyone else had this problem before? I was thinking of cleaning them again with something a bit harsher (acetone?) thinking maybe they are a bit oily, but thought I would look for advice first.

Thanks!

dont use acetone it will destroy the finish... check out the threads in the history section to check on how to clean your models.

I have had the same problems with resin minis in the past. I was told that it could be that the primer is too thick. For resin minis you should only lightly dust the mini to get a surface with good grip. If the miniature is solid white your primer is too thick resulting in the effect you (and I) have been experiencing.

I can\'t verify this though as I didn\'t have the chance to test this so far.

acrylic car primer works, just use a thin coat.
alternatively you could check out the resin primer products on the market, generaly japanese in origin and toxic as hell, but do the job superbly.

i use hycote acrylic car primer (spray can)

Thanks! I don\'t believe it was the cleaning technique, but i\'ll get some proper spray primer and try again...

After I wash a resin model I try to not touch it again without wearing gloves or using something to pick it up. The grease from your hands can stop paint adhering. In fact even once its primed and undercoated I use a glove as most larger FW stuff is too big to stick onto a film canister :)

Try cleaning with toothpaste, the abrasives in it help roughen the surface a tiny bit and remove that smoothness.

Then use car primer, or a decent spray undercoat.

I had the same problem with a dreadnought weapon from Forgeworld. the paint applied but it came off in flakes as soon as I touched it. I re sprayed it and then gave it a quick spray with some dullcote. Seems to have worked.

I had a big problem with this same issue recently. I had an Ultraforge demon and I washed the hell out of it with dish soap and a toothbrush. Primed it, and airbrushed the first couple layers. Then I apply a thinned down oil paint wash, and all the paint comes off when I hit it with the brush. Pissed me off. So strip it in the simple green and now it\'s ready for it.

So I get to thinkin\', why not just let all my resin mini\'s soak in simple green for a week then scrub them off? That should take care of any release agent right?

So.... Simple green appears to have eaten 1/2 batches of Forge World Death Korps models I put in their. The Commissar, which appears to be made of a more rigid type of resin is fine. The other stuff, and autocannon crew, has gone all rubbery. What\'s worse is it appears to have left little blue strands all over the damn place. Pieces of the mold maybe?

So now I don\'t know what to do. I can try and paint it, but as I would be selling it and it\'s soft as all hell I worry that any customer would be p\'o\'d or worse yet accuse me of casting it myself with some crappy resin.

Don\'t want to sell it as is for the same reasons. Sigh. I hate it when things go wrong on the expensive crap. Why couldn\'t this have happen to some Battle for Skull pass night goblins?

So since I had a failure with the dish soap and simple green ate my hopes and dreams I am going to give the toothpaste thingy a shot. Maybe powdered bleach/comet type stuff?

There\'s a chance it will re-harden over time; how long\'s it been so far?

I\'d recommend one of the cream surface cleaners if you have the equivalent over there - opaque, off white, slightly gritty, you know the kind of thing?

try white spirit to clean the mini also a light sanding can roughen the surface enough for the paint to stick properly, hope this helps, p.s make sure its totally dry

Yeah Einion, they\'re starting to firm up some, but some of the detail has smooshed up some. Alos from time to time I\'ve pulled out blue colored pirces of the mold from the FW range, and it appears there was a lot of that on this autocannon set, and it\'s all melted and going to be a pain in the ass.
