Paint over varnish

Hi all, got a question here:

I was in such a rush to finish my paint job for a painting competition so I varnished the fig. Now I want to add something to the cloak of the fig.

My question is, is it safe to add a couple layer of paint on top of varnish. I mean will the paint stick on the varnish as well as it stick on a primer/paint and won\'t chip off the fig as long as I varnish it again after the addition?

I use Krylon Matte Sealer to finish my figs, and I\'ve certainly found problems that wanted to be fixed after sealing and have successfully been able to paint over the matte sealer.

I don\'t know how that would differ from the varnish. You may need to paint a very thin layer or two to build up an area that paint will stick to better ... I\'m not really sure.

It is perfectly acceptable and a normal part of painting.

Many people will varnish before painting details so they can easily remove any mistakes without ruining the previously applied paint.

I\'ve done it many times, specifically when I want to apply a glaze. If you blend on the model, then varnish, then apply your wash you\'ll find the finished result smoother.

Putting a coat of gloss varnish before painting metallics will improve the appearance of the metallics.

Apply a base colour, varnish, apply another colour, then sand with very fine grit sandpage. You can create realistic paint wear.

Anyway, yes, you can paint over varnish, then re-varnish without any trouble.

Painting over varnish

Vaitalla taught me a technique that I use for competition figs, or for minis I don\'t want to f*** up with my sausage fingers.

She sprays Testors Dull Cote over the fig and lets it dry, and the matte grabs and holds the paint. I tried this long ago with Gloss and didn\'t get good results, so I was pleasantly suprised when she showed me this and it worked!

As Sivousplay attests, it works for Krylon Matte too. (Big Krylon fan.)

Cool... thanks for all your input. It\'s a great idea to matte varnish everything before adding details and not messing with the earlier painted area.

I\'m currently using Citadel matte varnish spray can. So far I\'m satisfied with the result. It helps make the paint look smoother. I hope additional layer of paint on top of it will work as good as Krylon or Testor.
