Painting Amber?

HI, I was just wondering if anyone has ever painted jewels up as amber, rather than the usual red or blue stones.

I\'m about to start painting some GW Wood Elves in a pretty much all earth tones scheme, and I want to do amber for any jewels but have never attempted this before.

Does anyone have any tips from experience on this?

Hi lorelorn......

......Welcome to the forums! ;) I\'d suggest for the amber to use a darker yellow base with possibly some orange in it,then right up to bright yellow,I probably wouldn\'t opt for the final white highlight as it may detract from the overall effect. The browns is a good idea,I did some in really light browns and they looked pukka.Look forward to seeing the results of the amber experiment,I\'m goinng to give it a try :D

Check out the jewell on my Eclipsantes head. Night not be the best angle, but I think it shows the colouring. If it what you are looking for I will dig out how I did it.

I will also try to get a better pic of it to acompany the how to.:D

I guess painting jewels with gold nmm colours, but with the gem painting technique ( lighter at the bottom with white spot reflection) would make it look like amber, since gold wouldn\'t reflect like that.

Gold nmm recipe (GW colours): Scorched Brown, Bestial Brown, Snakebite Leather, Bubonic Brown, Bleached Bone

hope this helps :)

thanks for the help everyone. I\'d decided on what to do, but then realised I had no idea how to do it!

Also thanks for the welcome, it\'s good to be here!

Atacam: thanks for the pic link- I\'m thinking more brown than orange for an amber stone. I\'ll give a try with the GW or Vallejo colours, and if I can get a photo I\'ll post it here.

Thanks for the pic atacam- I think you reproduced that perfectly on the mini!

I guess I\'ll try all the suggested effects and see which one suits the rest of the paint scheme best- I\'m still thinking brown over orange as I want the stones to blend in rather than stand out from the rest of the figure- and I\'m intending to use browns.

Time to suck it and see I guess :)
