I struggle to paint decent banners to put on my models and was wondering if anyone had any good tips. At the moment I am making them from paper or blank labels and painting them with simple symbols. I would like to be able to acomplish more realistic looking banners with more complicated designs. Can anyone help????

I\'m no expert - I started using \'junk\' banners on my 40K orks before they became standard, because I could never paint good banners - but one thing that did work for me a couple of times was using aluminium foil instead of paper. It holds its shape better and also takes paint better.
I know some people who are good at art, but not at that scale, draw or paint their banners at 3 or 4 times actual size, then scan them and print them out reduced.

When I feel the need for a banner,
1) Design it on the computer first.
2) Then shrink it down to the appropriate size.
3) Print it out on a sheet of Avery adhesive labels in the color printer.
4) Take the label cut out the banner and peal the backing off.
5) Fold it in half and seal the adhesive sides together.
6) Last paint the edges ever so slightly.
This will give you a striking banner and very little effort.

Get some informations about different materials.
I\'ve heard the foil from wine bottles is excellent and can be ordered in plain sheets.
I trained painting banners on printed black&white banners from the GW website.
This way I achieved a decent level of shading and highlighting (though real banners aren\'t so complex).
Another tip is to use good paper. If you go more complex you will use more layers of paint and bad paper will do things you don\'t want.
I also saw someone who used silk or wool for banners thogh you\'ll need experience with painting these materials.

If you scan in a banner design and flip it in a graphics programme and then print it out, you should try rolling out a hump of White Stuff over it. When you\'ve covered the design in an equally thick layer, cut it out and shape it like a banner, then let it set. When set, wash the paper off with soap and warm water, the ink will have transferred to the White Stuff, no more banner painting!

I\'m sorry, but that\'s a contradiction in terms: more realistic banners would be simpler, not more complicated.
