Painting Blunders Volume I

Every now and then I sculpt a miniature that encourages me to break my 15 year + painting hiatus. Every time I hate the process! I ask myself: "Why the hell does it take me so long?! Even just to undercoat?!". Well, the realisation slapped me across the chops like a wet fish last night when I viewed a tutorial on YouTube... The reason it takes me so long to get my basic colours down is because I'm using too damn small a brush!! How can I expect to undercoat, etc quickly using a circa 1995 GW standard brush?! :-0

Interestingly, most of my GW paints are ~20yrs old and still going strong. As for my black and dark green, these GW paints are less than 4 years old and both almost dry as a bone (after more or less NO use). Poor pot design?

Yeah, made that mistake as well. Another tip I've read was use the side of the brush rather than the tip, at least for some areas. Wish I'd known about that trick 20 years ago. Course, I wish I'd found mini painting twenty years ago.

My GW paints from 5 years ago are acting the same. I say it is the pot. My Reaper paints from then are fine save a couple, and I've only recently started using them for when the kids paint. Course, they want to use the better set I've got, so the old paint may become basing paint.

Yes! So far, I've got as far as undercoating one leg! The original plan was to paint one before I started selling them however I then remembered just how long paint jobs take me... I do have three very talented painters working on my Pie Clowns over the coming weeks. I look forward to sharing those pictures as I receive them!

Kind of! I started with just a white face but it looked too plain. I gave him some rosey clown cheeks but they looked terrible! The Saw inspiration came from my half-finished paint job for my recent Halloween sculpt*...

* i.e. my Billy puppet sculpt! Really need to finish this guy off...

Cheers mate! Think I need to work on my photography though... Personally I think it looks better "in the flesh", but that's surely just my crummy eyesight and poor lighting! Very forgiving conditions, lol!

When I started mini painting a very long time ago my first blunders were to not trim the miniatures and to use paint straight out of the pot. Learned fast to trim and thin.
