Painting Cherry blossoms on a base?

So I got a request to paint up some cherry blossoms on the base fo a 28mm Ronin fig. huh. Don't know WHAT the heck to do. This was the reference pic he gave me....

Help? Anyone? My initial thought was to base it as I normally would, fine sand glued to the base, then PVA some coarse NOCH foliage then paint them whitey pinky purpley after that. But if someone has a super duper easy way, I am down with the sickness!

Personally, I'd just paint them on a flat base, perhaps a light blue or brown depending on your overall composition. They are really just 5 teardrops in a circle, points together. I'd stylize it like in Japanese screens or fans. Perhaps add a branch or two so you can show them in clusters. Pink, White and Lilac are the most common colors. An image search for "cherry blossom" on Google returns a lot of good results. Better than the reference you were given, IMO.

I researched these a while ago when I painted "Hanako": http://coolminiornot.com/87687

I think if you want to do a sand and "stuff" base you might want to look into die cut flowers or maybe try cutting up some smooth fabric into teardrop leaves... Don't know how well that would work, I never tried it.

Hope that helps a little?

Find the image you want, edit it, print onto water slide transfer paper, prepare base, fit transfer, varnish. job done.

Thiose are some good thoughts. I am going to try the flock thingy after I saw a decent result (not quite what I was after, but close) on soem 15mm stuff. If my printer was up and running I might give th waterslide stuff a shot.

That mini is really nice Heather, very cool!

Thanks guys, I'll post what i get and we'll see if it works or not!

Good description Heather, however the flower petals don't land on the ground like that. They fall as individual petals.
The local Cherry tree blossom makes a huge mess of our pavements in the spring.

nah, I know, but artist-license... especially when working with Japanese stuff. Like the Egyptians, there is a tradition of stylization over realism. So you can get away with a lot. ;) All depends on what the artist envisions. I like the idea though... I've got a bunch of figs that would work with this... hmmm... just what I need... more ideas.

Another thought, you could place a fallen "branch" with flock in clusters on the base along with "petals" on the ground. This might convey cherry blossoms more than the flock alone. Personally I think that the flock alone on the base would end up resembling Clover. But then, you may be much better with flock than I!

PS: Glad you like Hanako - she's a favorite of mine!
