Painting Class.....Skin up with Klute

Right the here we go.
A few words first.
I am in no way saying what I paint is the be all and end all of miniature painting.
What I will do is guide you through painting a figure using my own techniques. If you use the same figure then great,if you dont then hopefully I can help you with what you do have.
What I do not want is someone telling me Im doing it wrong.Wives and girlfriends are for that.Thats not becuase Im bigheaded, its becuase it will make things easier.I am always open to suggestion though as long as you remember my word is final.

The figure I am using is the concubine from Hasslefree.Heres a link to their webshop if anyone wants to buy her.
Hasslefree
Im not trying to sell for them or anything, just pointing in the mini\'s direction.
Like I say any figure with skin could be used.

So...on with the show.
Here is the figure cleaned and mounted on a piece of dowel for handling.I usually base them before painting but this one is going on a freehand base maybe so kept her seperate.
She is primed with GW skull white spray. All my white skin is based with white. If you have a figure primed black then put a white basecoat where you want the skin.Use thin paint and build up the colour with many layers until you get a smooth solid white basecoat.Very important.

I will leave it at that for now.
Just drop any questions here.Post images of your primed figures for direct feedback.
Wait for me to post the next step, never jump ahead of me please.Always follow my lead.
What do you think the step durations should be?
I think if I wait until Saturday to do the next step it gives plenty time.

Later
Mark.

Might sound corny but if helps only 1 person then its worth it.
So will this mean an image post from the scarlet pimpernel of the mini painting world?

Probably not....

That\'s no criticism of your inspiration, just a realistic reflection of my own priorities...;)

Hi,I\'ve ordered the concubine as she\'s all flesh and did seem a good figure for this, for the moment though I\'ll work on \'My Hero\' which I\'m sure most are familiar with. :D Good choice there Klute, you couldn\'t have chosen a barer figure! lol

Here\'s ma based mini then:

wip_basecoat.jpg

I dont use sprays tho. I slobbed some primer on with a medium sized brush.

Her right arm with the shield is not yet attached, cause i cant reach parts of her body if I put the shieldarm on already.

I am leaving town for a couple of days :( Chaperoning my daughters 5th grade class for two days:eek: will be back late friday night, will find and prime a mini then, if I don\'t then I will watch and take notes!

Neat idea. I\'ve actually got a ME3 miniature that would work just fine with this so I\'ll cheat a bit and use it.

Actually, depending on how long this is likely to take, I might just switch out to another miniature (gotta strip it and prime it tomorrow as I got it in a trade) and just follow along with that.

Thanks Klute, interesting, I\'ll play along.

I wanted to buy a concubine, but they\'re not released in Germany yet :( , so I\'ll use the Hasslefree Harem girl I wanted to paint for a long time.
I\'ll make a photo later, the digicam has no batteries at the moment.???
Had anyone else that problem with her, that her hands where bend in a way that would fit around no base? I had to bend them flat , to get her on her original base

Color palette

Klute--thank you so much again for this workshop. I will be getting a miniature later this week to primer. While I am out, I was wondering what colors you plan on using. I have some flesh tones, but in an effort to try :) and replicate your work, I was going to pick up paints as similar to yours as I can, if I don\'t have them already.

Hi me again.

@Sakura........harem girl is fine.Have you got paypal cos Hasslefree ship worldwide?Good rates too.Is it a 20mm base the figure is on.Some of them come with 20mm.I usually base mine on the rounded Warmachine type anyway.
@Duende......Sophie is a great choice,well primed too.
@Etherion......any figure with bare skin is fine.Watch the brush on priming though.Make sure its solid white.Just keep going over it with thinned white until its solid.Thats the reason I changed to spray.
@Becca.......yes bend the arm,it looks like she should be operating a puppet.Bend the shoulder down and the elbow forward a bit.It will disguise the length too. Also next pic you put up make it bigger and ditch the staff.Aim for the size of Duende\'s at least.

Everyone else.........I will post the 2nd step on saturday night GMT.To keep it simple,if your not in by then, you will have to wait till the next one. There will be a bit leeway of course:D

You will have to excuse me if I sound a bit rude here and there.I dont mean to be.
I am going to be frank and honest with everyone and dont want to pussyfoot about worrying about upsetting people.
I will visit the forum every day so should be able to keep up with things. If I miss someone out or for any other reason just pm me.

EDIT

@Jabberwocky.....I was going to post the colours with the next step, not using specific names but using swatches for you to match.I will say what Im using now though.

All GW.
White spray primer.
Tanned flesh
Elf flesh
Skull white

for eyes chaos black and bestial brown, pupil colour is up to you and depends on hair choice.

If you can get some flow enhancer.I use Windsor and Newton acrylic flow enhancer.

I use a dark blue and green for the basecoat too but its not essential. No colours are really its the technique which is important.I hardly ever stick to set recipes for skin.It makes for a good variation.

Thats the basic skin colours, eyes hair etc you can decide for yourselves

I\'m in!

Here\'s my mini, a Reaper dancing girl from ME#3:

dancinggirlpaintcourse.jpg

I\'d like to do something a bit more skinny and perhaps a wee bit bigger. Hasslefree can\'t be bought here in DK except from Jenova, so I\'llhave to make do....perhaps some Spyglass?

Off to the lgs...

It is going to be interesting to see this pan out. I too will look at this on a regular basis as it may give me a hint or two I have always liked the way you do your skintones.
