In an effort to improve my painting i\'ve been picking up various painting dvd\'s that have been offered, including those from miniature mentor, and the JB dvd.

Just curious if people would be interested in me writing comments/reviews on them.

In regards to Kaple\'s CD I did 2 picture tutorials while Rune Kappel did all the video-tuts and loads more. I am still damn proud of the CD. Both for me being featured which is cool, but mostly proud on Rune\'s behalf for putting the thing together.

I stand corrected.. Jakob didn\'t know you worked on a DVD.. too cool!

I have most of these dvd tutorials so will offer my input:

The JBT has some nice topics/techniques covered, however the production value is very buggy. If you are french speaking, you will probably have no problems, however for other languages (english in my case), there are subtitles that stop displaying halfway through on some videos, making that particular video useless. Sometimes a different language (spanish) subtitle will display instead of the english. Also they sent out PAL format DVDs to the US which uses NTSC format, which means you will only be able to view the dvds from your computer. They also mislabeled the dvds 1 and 2. Personally, I feel like I paid to test out the dvd since these are bugs that should have been caught very early on and fixed. I also think that they should offer to replace the discs when these bugs are fixed.

Miniature Mentor has seem decent tutorials, however most are specific artist\'s techniques. So if you paint a certain way like using thin layers to build up transitions, then some of the other tutorials will be useless for you. I found the Alan C video to be different from my own, so I\'m sure it works for some people, but I found no value in it. It\'s nice to see how other artists paint, but once you find a style that works for you, the other vids are not going to be that valuable. I like the Jen Haley video though, they get into more detail with the thought process instead of the other videos which show a lot of the same painting over and over again.
Also they seem to be listening to what customers are saying and implementing those suggestions into the newer videos, so they are improving and they should have some nicer tutorials coming out.

The Kaple.dk video is really only 20 minutes of video. The rest of the \"dvd\" is actually just text and picture tutorials just like on cmon. I found it aimed mostly for the beginner.

Mini DVD\'s

I recently bought the Allan C tutorial and find it really useful. The techniques he shares have saved me a lot of time and I feel my painting has really gone up a notch since applying what I\'ve learned from the DVD. I\'ve actually nearly finished my first mini in over four years. This is a miracle! I think I\'ll hold off for a while in the Jeremie B instructional as I\'m still working on consolidating what I\'ve learned and am still learning from Allan\'s DVD.

I have the Kappel painting DVD. There are useful tutorials in the DVD, and that there are videos displaying him painting i find helpful, although i wish he would have made a video for his space marine tutorial.

The downside is that when you have questions for him, you need to become a member of his forum. which is not the problem actually, the problem lies there that he has to validate you account for you being able to post. I tried this in february, and still have no validation. I\'ve sent a couple of emails, but recieved no reply whatsoever.

RobberBaron says the reason why i don\'t go with miniature mentor, because each artist has his own individual style in painting, although i think i might purchase the metallic metal one though.

hope it helps.

cheers,

Chris

I believe they are as has been mentioned.

We will contact the customers already in possession of one of these DVD once a compatible version is ready in their language. It should be done in September.

Here\'s the link to the thread.

Allan C video

I picked this one up to see what they were about and I agree with the previous poster. It\'s interesting to see how he paints, but it\'s his own style and I doubt it would work for me.

That being said if you pay attention you are sure to find some ways to improve your own technique. Any time you watch a top-level painter you can pick up a tidbit- if you\'re paying attention.

Is it worth the $25 to pick up a few tips? If you like Allan\'s style and you think it is- go for it.

So far I\'ve bought a few of the Miniature Mentor videos and I\'m loving them. I bought the \"advanced series\", the Jen Haley vid and the Allan C vid. I enjoy them for multiple reasons: I actually am interested in the interviews with great painters, seeing how they work, watching how they apply the paint and listening to their thought processes. I also felt like I\'ve already learned some new tricks to try out.

The production values are very high. Honestly, if some of the other \"coming soon\" videos were available now on their site I already would have bought them. Im hungry for more of these.
