Fluffy Wolfen article

Hey all,

this is just a quick heads up to say that I have now got an article with pics on how to paint fluffy wolfen here at CMON. Its something I\'ve been meaning to do for a while now, as I get quite a few people asking me how to paint fluffy moon puppies.

Link:

As this is a painting technique I thought I\'d post the link here. I\'ve also posted this in the Confrontation forum, since it\'s related to those minis specifically. So to avoid confuusion, it would be best if people do not reply to this thread, but to the one over on that forum, if thats OK. ;D

Regards

Hey Kat! I tried out your technique, and although its not finished yet, I wanted to post a couple of piccies for you to see...

I painted a Devourer Headhunter because he had the greatest area of fur. Here he is...

Thanks Kat! Any tips/comments would be most appreciated!

Hi Peter!

Great job, it looks fine as it is I think. Maybe give him a bit of that darker tan colour along the top of his muzzle, but other that that its superb!

Dunno, Kat, I think the right side of his muzzle, which is darker, looks fantastic as-is, while the right side needs to be darkened to match.

Snikies, that\'s a cool mini. I can\'t wait to see it finished!

 Oh yeah! I see what you mean!!! Thanks for pointing that out, I hadnt noticed that before!

So you dont think I should add some of the darker fur look to the top of his head between the eyes and down the top of his nose? I wasnt sure when I was painting it so i left it light...

Actually, one other thing while I am here - how should I do his eyes? like a \'normal\' human? or leave them dark brown/black and gloss varnish?

thanks!

I honestly don\'t know what to do with the top of the head or eyes. I\'m loath to say something like that to someone who\'s obviously a much better painter than me.

What would it look like if a dog or wolf had similar coloring? That would be your best clue for finishing the head.

Canine irises are larger in relation to the eye than a humans, are they not? So there wouldn\'t be much white showing?

I think the eyes look pretty cool the way they are, but if you decide to go for defined iris, maybe it should be focused forward of the fig and show much less of the white of the eye than you would see on a human.

I hope that helps.

Totally up to you, this to me says more of a dog colouration than a wolf and as you probably know patterns on dogs\' faces can be practically anything. So, if you wanted to give him more of a doggy look than a wolfish look, you could leave him as is, or even go for a patch of the orange over one side of the face.

However, if you were to want him to look more wolf or husky-like I\'d go with a bit more contrast on the face, I think that the top of the snout, leading up to the top of the head, the ears and perhaps a thin line of the orange fur leading round in a curve under the eyes (leave a gap of white fur around the eyes, but have the orange below that) would make him look more husky-like in colouration. ;)

As for the eyes, I normally go for yellow or ice blue iris and black pupils. Some wolves have a deep orange iris and this could work nicely with your colour scheme. Dogs on the other hand tend to have brown eyes, if you decide to keep him more dog-like, I\'d keep the eyes looking dark. Either way, I think he\'s looking really nice right now! :D

Hey, thanks People!

I think I will wait with the eyes until I have done everything else, but I quite like the idea of light brown/orange iris! But yeah, I would have them focussed more forward, and with very little white showing.... still not decided yet :p

As for darkening the face, I light add some of the slightly darker tone across the top of his muzzle, but not much darker than it is - he is only a small puppy after all (compared to the Tyrant ;)) but I will certainly even out the dark areas round the mouth.

I am glad you thought he looked more like a dog than a wolf - his colouring is based on an Alsatian picture I found on the net! :D

I\'ve been experimenting with more husky patterns recently for a bit of variety. I think the devourers lend themselves well to the more \"domestic\" breeds of dog, because their facial features seem to be broader in the muzzle and they also don\'t have the sculpted mane of fur around the back of the head showing, unlike the wolfen. This gives the impression of a shorter fur. So if I ever do a full devourer army, I will probably go for colorations like alsatians, rottweillers, Jack Russels etc. Was the alsatian that you based this one on particularly pale? I know you can get some really light coloured ones. :D

Yeah, it was pretty pale... the Flesh-eater I am about to start (just been doing his armour) will be similar colours, but a much darker version - more of the dark fur, and a darker face. Although you wont be able to see most of it as he has clothes and armour on!! (might have to get some of those new wolfen predators when they are released JUST to try the technique properly ;))
