Painting from Prison????

CMONers,

A very specific question here. Does anyone know if incarcerated members of our society are allowed to paint from prison? More specifically, a military prison?

A bit of info I can provide: There is a bit on the internet about this already. I found this thread on TMP:

http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=93339

You may end up telling me that a prisoner may be able to paint, but how could they cut and file? Many prisons allow these tools to the average well behaved inmate. From the above thread I learned this and that different prisons have different policies. I am more concerned with federal military prisons, like Leavenworth or a local equivalent, and their policies for prisoner recreation. I realize that knowledge of this extremely specific question is going to be limited, just hoping the right person reads this. Thank you in advance

Hmm...good idea. I HATE it when someone responds with a simple google search solution that I could/should have just done myself. Makes me feel sheepish. Baaaaah......baaaah......

Thank you for pointing this out and going to lengths to provide me with a number.

I spent 13 years in the Marine Corps and from what I saw on the command visits I had to do on Marines in the brig (Pearl Harbor and Camp Lejeune), I don't believe they would be allowed to paint miniatures. Leavenworth is a whole different animal than the standard post brig. It would be best if you called them and asked. It's a kinder, gentler military now and the rules and regs change every year.

Actually, I am looking for information on Leavenworth, but also a facility that is a step down in security level, I believe. The Northwest Joint a Regional Correctional Facility. They offer horticulture classes here, for instance. Although that has obvious usage as professional development. However, many prisons have painting as a leisure activity. Either way, I'll be sure to share what I find.

Interesting thread, not sure about the UK's stance.
Don't know anyone in the Prison Service, Cops a plenty and several "Ground Pounders" but no one working in HMP's.

(Oh and HMP= Her Majesty's PleasureCamps)

RE:British prisons

The host in QI said he printed miniatures in prison. Obviously in low security prisons its done.

Mike...why would they put a 5 yr old in prison for fraud ?

:) :) :)
And the rest!
Stephen Fry's 56, so in a mainstream prison at least 18.
He probably was in an "Open" prison (Low risk) as he only did a few months, for credit card fraud (looked it up).
Open prison's have less restrictions on the inmates often allowing them "day passes" prior to release, and yes of course we do have abscondees under that system.

If the possession of knives and cutters are the problem can't you just have a friend prep the miniatures for you, so when they arrive you only need to paint them? Possession of paintbrushes and water-based colour shouldn't really be a problem.

This is what I thought as well, but prisons in general have very strict rules about what
they allow inside, harmless or not. But many prisons actually do allow
files and knives to the demonstrably safe inmates. But yes, in the likely instance that the prepping items are prohibited, one would need them prepared before arriving. It would seem beneficial to prison security to allow a recreation like miniature painting. I have the feeling that the majority of prisons, USA and our fondest neighbors, the Uk, do NOT allow miniature painting.

QI is a comedy quiz show hosted by Stephen Fry, who did time in prison IIRC for fraud.
But that would be around 35-40 years ago as he's close to my age, things may well be different now.

The Craft is a bit more mainstream over there with Her Majesty's People. Over here, one might be told "No, you can't paint your dolls in here! What are you, TRYING for surprise sex?"

Mainstream?
In the UK?
HELL NO!

Mainstream over here is Football & Beer, anything else and you're looked on as queer (both meanings)!
Exercising an intellectual pursuit, or an artistic one, gets you some funny looks and often rude or caustic comments.

Same thing applies over my understanding and appreciation of IDIC.

Okay, so not mainstream, but more so than here. Sure, we have more people, so potentially more miniature fanatics, but you guys have to have more per capita. This is because you guys actually have history beyond the 17th century. Ask most Americans about their ancestry and they'll say "Im German and Irish with a bit of Native American. But truthfully, 99 percent of us have no idea who we are ethnically. So basically, you guys actually have castles and such still standing over there, and so a greater fascination for medieval fantasy. And Nottingham. And a monarch. Of course I have no data to back this up, just some rational deductive reasoning. But this has failed me before. Once.
