Painting horseflesh

Doing a figure for a client, and I\'m aiming for a light grey semi-dappled effect on the horse\'s skin. I\'d appreciate any and all comments, critiques, or suggestions on painting horses, if possible, as I\'m trying to get a realistic look without 5 billions layers of paint.

good photo references would help. Like this:

now, this effect I would do with a spatter brush or a spatter tip in an airbrush:

you may want to try keeping all your brush strokes going in the same direction as the horse\'s hair, and refrain from blending too much to leave a look of being textured.

Real life and many stresses right now have kinda limited my painting time, but I\'ve been putting in quite a bit of work the past few evenings. Does it look like a horse, per the original thread posting?

In my mind, the only thing left is to highlight the armor up to a nice, shiny silver and to tidy up a few slip-ups (like the stripe of gold on the head armor, etc.)

I\'d really like feedback on the overall appearance though and the general \"horsiness\" of the horse, as it\'s a first attempt at painting a realistic-looking horse. Likewise, if anyone notices any areas needing touching up, I\'d appreciate \'em being pointed out. I\'m cool with blunt critique, so long as it\'s constructive!

(Pardon the semi-gloss, as it\'s caused by the ingredients in my paint thinning mixture.)

It looks like quite a sweaty horse at the mo :) (Little shiny)
But I\'m sure a bit of matt varnish will eliminate that.

As for the dapples - how about just having a lighter or darker colour dotted on, but very watery...?
As in - you have the brush loaded with water and add a dot (To a flat surface so that it doesn\'t run!)

And hopefully, when the paint dries the tide mark effect might work.

I don\'t KNOW as I haven\'t tried it - but it works in my mind! :p

I figgered I\'d post the finished figure for posterity:

I guess I didn\'t clarify enough in my last post - I decided that doing individual dapples would\'ve been a bit much and just stuck with a stippled paint job on the skin, aside from final highlights which were generally thinned layering.

Two questions:
Does it look like a quasi-realistic horse? (Skin, mouth, eyes, etc.)

Anyone have suggestions on painting horses in general (or adding to this one) to make them more realistic looking?
