Painting IG Stormptroopers and kasrkin for Fallout Brotherhood of Steel

Looking thru posts here and on line the IG storm troopers and Kasrkin Troopers- seem to be just a pain in the buttocks to paint.
I have decided on going with black and the more lightish grey-green early german WW2 field grey color scheme ( think crete style fallschimjager color) in keeping with the brotherhood of steel look ( the AT 43 tac arms style dudes are my power armor guys and I them did awhile back and like the look) while the storm troopers guys will be the more numerous lighter armed troops supporting the psuedo BoS force as the battle has heated up and is no longer power armor vs power armor, think Forge world pre-heresy Marines and DKoK as the Enclave with AT-43 and urban mammoth viridians as the BoS style resistance guys.

My two questions,

Would you go field gray armor and black clothing or black armor and field grey clothes ? I did sample both ways and neither did the trick... Im tossing vehicles into the game and painting them field grey with a nuclear winter white wash and kind of wanted the armor on the troops to match the armor vehicles.... but cant just seem to get it to work...

Any advice would be apprecaited

I always find that grey and black seems good (and easy) in theory but never looks all that nice in practice. I'd go with grey and something else but if you're set on grey black I'd do grey fatigues and black carapace.

/edit, actually looking through this gallery I seem to have painted some stuff in grey and black, but I've also done a lot of single minis with grey + another colour and I prefer them to gery/black.
