Is it not possible to use painter's tape around the edges? If not, you could try a brush with most of the bristles cut off. The shorter the bristles, the easier it will be.

Not the case, in fact it would make the job far more difficult as you'd lose paint wicking capacity with the lack of bristles.
Perhaps Hendarion might need to consider trying to use a Watercolour Rigger brush. These are designed to hold (and deliver) long straight strokes.
They were after all created for painters of ships on canvas and paper in order to produce the rigging lines with greater ease.

Sooo... I've tried out various things. The problem is: The grooves are deep. So the side-walls need to be painted separately, it is not enough to use a pen or brush to paint the bottom of it, but it also requires to paint the sides. Really annoying. For an average Falcon most tricks probably would work, but the Forgeworld-Scorpion is a meany in that matter. It helps to first make the grooves wet to get the black flowing inside and get the bottom covered, but the sides still have to be worked out with a brush. At least some. Some of the grooves seem even to be undercut. Really weird.

I build and paint a lot of model aircraft and armour and the technique I use is shown here. The wash this guy makes is made from some sort of clay and dries very opaque, however it wipes away from the finished surfaces very easily (as long as you use a gloss coat first, Future is my preferred product.)
