Hi all
My nameis Neil and I recently had a comission done of Kho\'sarro khan by a mate and now I want to get started on the paintjob, but I\'m a little scared I\'ll screw up such a nice model.
Here\'s the model:

Now what I need to know is what would be the best undercoat for it, white or black? and if so how do I make the white look good? advice would be really helpful here. It\'s been doing my head in for a few weeks now and I really want to get started! And once i fathom out how to properly put pics on here I\'ll show how I\'m getting on.

Thankyou all

Neil

i see you use Photobucket, I use it too and i use the IMG Code wich appears at the side of the photo (under the menu: Share this image) when you\'ve clicked on the photo.

Your friend did a good job on the conversion, looks really good!

As for the undercoat I think it depends on which colors you are goin to use, but i dont have any experience with white undercoating.

welcome neil!

nice conversion there!

by the name, i assume he is a white scar sm?

if he\'s gonna be white, i would undercoat white and then use thin washes to shade

that\'s a nice bit of conversion work there...
i\'m sure you wanna do it justice...
the first thing would be to make sure that every last mould line is gone...
nothing ruins a nice paintjob like mould lines...

white or grey undercoat would definitely make your life easier...
i paint everything from black, and while you can achieve a nice finish, it takes a lot longer, and more careful thinning of your paints...
white is not forgiving, and any little ridge of paint stands out like a mountain...
you have to lay down a lot less layers of paint if you undercoat white...

have fun...

cheers

Oops, I should have said it was a white scars captain. Thanks for the feedback so far, I\'m thinking I may go for white basecoat, question is, should I use GW skull white spray or not? Also any ideas for colours to shade the white with?
cheers

i would use halfords (hycote is supposed to be better but i haven\'t tried it)

also, put where you live in your profile, it\'s hard to give brand names if we don\'t know where you reside

I start with black because my mid-grey (slightly lighter than Codex grey) undercoat goes better over black than white. The other reason is I find starting from shadows and moving to highlights much easier than vice versa. I\'m not crazy, I swear! :bouncy:

Hi Neil!

I looked at the thread cos of the crazy title, then looked at the link and recognised the piece you showed me in the store

Neil\'s from the UK....he\'s THE GW store person here in Bedford, the one person locally I talk to face to face about miniatures!!!!

Personally I\'d go grey for an undercoat; Have you thought about airbrushing the white armour to get a smooth surface for further paint?

Oh, I think this might work for a direct image:

And Jah is so right about mould lines.....these big close ups do show one or two; but I think an undercoat would help expose the ones that really need the extra work.

It\'s a great conversion.....it need a lil bit of tender care and attention.

cheers

Cheers Rob, Time to get those files out I guess. Hmmm, Grey does seem a popular opinion, I actually experimented earlier painting white up from Codex Grey with reasonable results though it did get a little grainy towards the end. The airbrush is probably the best way forward though I still don\'t feel that confident with it (probably doesn\'t help that my compressor isn\'t all that good). I will have a play with this bottle of Vallejo \'dead white\' and see how that comes out.
