Ok. So im starting a Sons Of Orar space marine army (hence the name). The chapter colours consists of red and white (have a look at my profile picture of one of their marines). The thing is, i cant seem to get the colour i want. Im trying to go for a darker red than what they should be but still keeping some of the bright red in there. At the moment im using a 1:1 mix of Mechrite red and water, and after im happy with the model coverage i then use a 1:1:1 mix of Mechrite red, Red gore and water and apply it to the areas where the 1:1 mix of Mechrite red has been used. Iv based the model with black and im thinking white is going to work a lot better anyways seeing as the shoulder pads for the model are white. Proberly would use some skull white citadel spray paint but money is tight at the moment :p any help would be great, im about a solid 8 for painting.

Pics would help. Instead of mixing darker red, try a brown with your red, like a burnt sienna type or darker. You can also try thin layers of just burnt sienna in the recesses and see if that goes in the direction you want. I'm not exactly positive where you want to go with your description.

You could also try working from a dark basecoat, whilst retaining extreme highlights - perhaps begin with a solid coat of VGC Hull Red, blend up to a Skorne Red, then highlight with a brilliant crimson like Khador Red Base.

i will paint your army for you for a decent price. :p

mechrite red, baal red wash, blood red first highlight, blood red and blazing orange 50/50 final highlight works well

Thanks for the advice everyone and in a very short time aha. And sorry about not putting pics up, camera is out of action for the moment. @kathrynloch, mixing a brow does actually sound like a good idea. I might give it a go. @gohkm, ill try that thanks for the advice :) @MrPickles, hahaha nice try but i actually enjoy painting myself ;) and ill also try your suggestion. Ill post pics of the results as soon as my camera is back up and i have enough money to buy minis and paint.... :p

Scorched Brown with Blood Red would be the route I go, then Blood Red on top, should give you a nice vibrant red (or it does with my Space Wolves) - I tend to apply quite a lot of layers for the effect I want. On the white I'd basecoat Astronomican Grey before the white. Will give you a very good coverage over the black.

I use vallejo model colour Burnt Cadmiun Red as a base for most of my reds. It is a darkish red brown that covers well and mixes well with lighter and brighter reds to create a myriad of different reds. Also try experimenting with adding purples, greens and blues to the base colour for shadows, some neat and interesting reds can come from that.

For marines the red base goes well with leviathan purple wash in all the recesses on the armor and looks amazing with a simply edge highlight of burnt cadmium red and a bright red in a 1:1 basis.

Vallejo costs me $2.79 USD for a bottle of game color or model color. Panzer Aces and Airbrush colors are $3.29.

You could easily get those from Hall of Heroes in Campbelltown or Realm of Legends if you're in Melbourne. Or just order them online.
