Hello all,

I have been struggling to paint a convincing looking metal that doesnt include use metalic paints. Any suggestions you have would be a tremendous help as I am at wits end trying to figure it out

First of all, welcome to the forum Griffin29 :).

I suppose you are asking about NMM (Non Metalic Metals). You should take a look at these two articles :

You should also post your work in the WIP thread to get feedback.

Hope it helps.

Study metal objects when you have the chance to get an idea of how reflections work in real life - that\'s what any painted effect is based on. If you have metal minis polish the kit before you prime (gentle scrubbing using a brass or bronze brush works very well for this) and see how it catches the light, take photos of it under varying lighting for reference.

Look at the work of illustrators and painters to see how they\'ve represented this reality using paint.

Lastly, save pics of your favourite minis painted using NMM and SENMM to your hard disk so you can study them at your leisure - if there is a particular example you like, try to copy it directly, that\'s a good way to learn.

Work patiently and build up to the finished effect in layers or with blending. For polished metal aim for a strong highlight and strong dark somewhere on the blade/armour or whatever; contrast is important to capture the right appearance. For scratched or weathered metals the effect is reduced so instead of white and black/dark grey you\'ll use a light grey/blue grey and medium-dark grey, with softer transitions from one to the next.
