Painting minis as gifts?

Out of curiosity, are there any painters out there planning to paint up a mini or two to give as a xmas gift this year?

I\'ve got 3 planned this year. Now if I finish them all in time is another matter.

First rule of gift mini-painting is: DON\'T OVEREXTEND YOURSELF! Better to get one/some done on time than none, if you get my drift. I did two last year, equestrian minis that I finished in record time. I was lucky... Also, it seems terrible to say this, but if the person you\'re giving them to isn\'t a mini/gaming person (or is a poor painter themselves), you can always cut a few corners, it\'s not like they\'ll know any better :D Anyway, painted minis are a great gift idea, people really appreciate something you obviously spent a lot of time working on, rather than yet more crap from the store!

A great birthday present

She\'s a lovely little figure Gerrie, not surprised your gf was so pleased with her :D

I painted a Samurai for my Mum a few years ago and she loved him. She was really thrilled that I\'d taken the time to paint him for her. It gave me a really good feeling too - but then again, when I make things for people it always feels nice :D

I hinted strongly that I wanted a painted mini this year from a friend of mine-I\'ve always preferred presents that are created just for me. I think it\'s a great idea :)

Next to mini painting/collecting...

...I\'m into taxidermy. Any ideas what I should be giving my dearly beloved this Yuletide:D

We (my wife & I) are painting 8 inch tall, resin snowladies and Santas for our moms. Also, a friend had asked us to do a commission piece for him and we are going to give it to him for Christmas (We told him we wouldn\'t be able to get to it until after the first of the year). BTW, he will not have to pay for the commission work (just thought I should clear that up).

Nice fig, I hope it got you some. If so i might have to change my tactics with the ladies \"of course askign them if they wanna see my miniature\" might not work

A whale. That would be a hell of a conversation peice.
When i die, I want my body to be stuffed, and put on display in a suitably menacing pose. Than I\'d become a familly heirloom, passed down from generation to generation.
*Well Timothy, now that you\'re getting married, i think you should be given your great grandfather James.\"
Now that would be awsome. I bet I\'d freak out all my great grandchildren, stupid kids.

I\'ve tried it before, generally with disasterous results. \"Hey, why did he get a fully painted warband, and I got stuck with a half finished Commisar?\" :flip::bouncy:

Mmmmmm.........don\'t quite get your point there.;) Maybe get her a nice ring? :D

*James* Forget stuffin\', I\'m gonna be cryogenically frozen when I\'m still alive and healthy. That way, I can be awoken periodically from my unholy slumber to inspect my offspring, and scare the s*** outta my grand-children personally.

Well I\'m gonna attempt to paint a unit of 5 Ellyrian Reavers for my friend, and hope that I can finish \'em in time. Sadly, to have 5 full, complete minis (specially ones with horses) ready by Christmas time, I would\'ve had to start...mmmmm....at age 5 or so, if my calculations are correct.

By mutual consent, I\'m slowly but surely painting my brother\'s warhammer 40K Ork Army for birthday, Christmas, graduation, easter, groundhog day... When a holiday comes up I just give hime whatever\'s finished.

I\'m painting a nice reaper Gossamer Air Sorceress for my wife.

just a Q to the girls.

do you like getting stuff like this?
i had done half of an angel of light (or mercy) and then chickend out and bought her some jewelry.

it would be nice mini but would it be appreciated by the girl. especially if she sees me painting all the time?

(she has a killer eye for detail  )

I think it is better to get your girlfriend something kind of expensive. Like a digital camera to capture those special romantic moments with.
Don\'t forget to make sure it has a macro ability, and a tripod is always nice.:D

Not really an unbiased answer, but...

..from a girls POV we kinda like making things and I personally think that if a bf of mine has a creative streak, then that\'s definitely a plus :D

However, re painting a mini for a gf or anyone really, just make sure you put effort into choosing a figure that they\'d really like. I mean, I don\'t think that yer Granny would like a nurgle conversion on a Rhino tank huh? But.....i think the Reaper Christmas Sophie minis would make a nice little collection each year that you could give to someone :)hint: :hint: if anyone\'s listening...anyone...no? oh well :( ) or the fairy at the CMON shop is sweet (and I\'m not talking about Borg) :D

Tooshy makes an excellent point. Make sure it is something they like, not just what you like.

I gave a painted reaper dragon to my sister in law for her 30th b day. She is into the dragonlance novels and dragons in general. She already had a collection of pre-painted ceramic dragons. So on a suggestion from my wife I painted it up.

Well, my sister in law was very happy to recieve it and that I had painted it up just for her and not just bought something in a store. The time and effort put into painting and choosing the mini made the gift that much more special to her.

just my two cents
lol

Oh :( I suppose I shall have to think of a different present now :(

tooshy I am now wondering what look you would see on a grandmothers face after unwrapping a nurgle conversion on a Rino (complete with real slime) on Christmas Day hehe :)

This year will be the first time I have ever painted a mini as a present. I know someone who is just THE biggest Lord of the Rings fan ever, and as she collects stuff to do with the films and books, I thought it would be cool to paint up one of the characters from LOTR and send it to her. In fact I should get moving on that as I am such a slow painter.

This thread inspired me. I am getting my mother and sister Lotr minis for yule. Sister and her husband loves the elves and especially Legolas so they are getting a Legolas and mother has a crush on Aragorn so she is getting one of those. :)
Thanks guys and gals for the idea.
