Painting minis as gifts?

Nice figure....

@farseerlum - it\'s a lovely figure, but could be really christmassy. In fact that would be a really nice theme - painting an angel for someone each year to collect :) It would still be great for a birthday present too :D

Actualy, I\'m currently fixing my dad\'s miniature I gave to him for his birthday one year. I had been given the GW black coach, and my dad loved the look of it (he really like mini painting, he always says he\'d collect if he had the time. It\'s good for me though, because i always get to go to gamesday with him:)). I modeled it so the horses were rearing up, as the coach slashes though some water in a kinda graveyard type place. Anyway, he loved it, and it stood in his office for ages, until it was broken recently (a horse broke off). For this christmas, I plan on fixing that mini, and maybe doing a dragon. He likes big impressive minis, do you have any ideas? (btw, no forgeworld stuff, it won\'t arrive in time.).

I started today painting a Rackham goblin for my sister... She had told me she liked this one very much, so I bought it.

And tosshy is right, choosing the right mini is the most important... Way more than the painting quality when you\'re giving it to people who are not in the hobby, since they can\'t properly judge the painting level :D.

I just hope I\'ll have time to finish that gobbo, should be all right though.

Andrea Miniatures (I think) do models that look a lot like Sean Bean (their Napoleonic rifleman) and Russel Crowe (a Roman general). I\'m pretty sure there are a lot of mothers out there who would appreciate a nicely detailed hearthrob for their mantlepiece. In fact, I might use that idea myself.

Not just mothers!

Hey, I\'d appreciate either of those figures as well, I just need someone to paint them up for me now :D

I wonder if anyone does a Johnny Depp/ Captain Jack Sparrow.......

However, re painting a mini for a gf or anyone really, just make sure you put effort into choosing a figure that they\'d really like.

Ironically, this is how I got back into the hobby after a three year hiatus. My girlfriend was looking through some boxes of figures that I had packed away and she loved the fine details. She later asked me if she could have some of my Tyranids, and other figures. So I\'m not sure what an appropriate figure is for her, she likes the bugs.. :)

By mutual consent, I\'m slowly but surely painting my brother\'s warhammer 40K Ork Army for birthday, Christmas, graduation, easter, groundhog day... When a holiday comes up I just give hime whatever\'s finished.

I\'m painting a nice reaper Gossamer Air Sorceress for my wife.

Haha! Great idea. That way, you\'ve got all your bases covered for the entire year. But then, do you have time to paint your own stuff?
:p

First rule of gift mini-painting is: DON\'T OVEREXTEND YOURSELF! Better to get one/some done on time than none, if you get my drift. I did two last year, equestrian minis that I finished in record time. I was lucky... Also, it seems terrible to say this, but if the person you\'re giving them to isn\'t a mini/gaming person (or is a poor painter themselves), you can always cut a few corners, it\'s not like they\'ll know any better :D Anyway, painted minis are a great gift idea, people really appreciate something you obviously spent a lot of time working on, rather than yet more crap from the store!

Hehe....
All good points. I know sometimes my family and friends are more impressed with the sculpt than my paintjob. So I\'ll know how to cut corners here and there.
:D

But I\'m sure they\'ll love the gifts. And it\'s true, many people appreciate gifts that took time to make rather than just chucking money in a store.

As long as it\'s not a but ugly knit sweater I suppose.
:p

Out of curiosity, are there any painters out there planning to paint up a mini or two to give as a xmas gift this year?

I\'ve got 3 planned this year. Now if I finish them all in time is another matter.

Planning to give two Reaper minis away as gifts. One is done. Just starting on the other.

you\'re luky...

My boyfriend wouldn\'t understand if I gave him a painted mini for present. He thinks that I paint for my own enjoyment and that when finished, the fig is mine and he doesn\'t care about it... I began to sculpt a dragon that I wanted to paint and to give to him, but now I\'ve understood and I need to find a reason to take time to finish it....:(

Naw. I think I have that curse too.
Anyways. Trying hard to finish those gifts. Currently working on a mini from Dark Ages: Gina from Gold Digger.

A pal of mine is a big Fred Perry fan and loves Gold Digger. I think he\'ll be thrilled to see a mini from them. Hey, I was surprised myself that there was a mini for them too! Thing is, I don\'t think there\'s any reference pics of her out now is there? Just kinda stumped on those glasses of hers.

Farseerlum - Yes, I\'ve painted 2 of those things: one for a friend who collects angels (years ago) and recently for my wife (girlfriend when I started). Beautiful piece.

A lot of ladies like angels, so you can\'t go wrong.

Unfortunately, none of my family appreciates the idea of painting minis, so I can\'t really do that for any of them. Too bad, would give me an excuse to lock myself in my room to paint.

Kamui - funnily enough, my comic store owner gave me 2 of the guy (can\'t remember the name) from GoldDigger. Not bad, if a little oversized compared to other 28-30mm minis.

I have more of a problem of trying to field complete units, because my girlfriend wants my figures. I tend to paint extra ones just for her.
