Painting on chrono

GreenOne

I paint my thumb.
Hi people.

Here I start a topic about painting times and standard.

My first two minis took me 20hrs each, to get them to my \"WillingNewb\" standard.
What about you guys? How long for a man-sized character model? To your top standard? For tabletop?
What is your speed record? Or greatest waste of time?

Just for talking...

Eight hours is a good average time for mine. My standard figure tends to get me between 7.1 and 8.6 here on CMON.

Depends on the mini, though -- I\'ve done some in only four to six hours, while others have taken ten to twelve.

I paint multiples at once, though, so it\'s very hard for me to estimate. I usually keep at least six figures on my painting desk at one time, and rotate between them during the day. They all are finished around the same time, however long that is. If I work on just one figure, it\'ll take, for example, eight hours to finish. But if I work on two figures at once, it\'ll only take ten hours or so.

These estimates would exclude things like ghosts, statues, and stone golems that take... like... an hour, including clear coat. :p

Likewise, ignores that Gamesday entries take longer -- I\'ve spent a good 25-30 hours on one already and haven\'t even primed it yet. This is a new thing for me, though... Even on GD entries, in the past I never spent this much time on one.

Painting on the chronic

???
Never worked out too well for me ;) Oh, sure. It\'d start out good. I\'d get all creative and come up with some fantastic ideas, but, y\'know, I\'d get the munchies and have to take a break then settle in and veg out to some tunes. Then I\'d remember that I was going to do some painting, but by then everything\'s dried up on the pallet and all so just forget it. Wasn\'t so bad when I was using oils and all - you could disappear into th ozone for a good 48 -72 hours and the stuff\'d still not be dry - but with acrylics, no way...

Depends on the mini... A Rackham mini takes about 10 hours for decent quality, 15 and more for good quality. But, I can make a Hasslefree mini look good in 5 hours since they\'re so clean and hassle-free! :D

sometimes has more to do with my mindset than the mini. My painting speed can vary greatly depending on my level of focus or what is going on around me offering distractions (*cough* chat programs).

But with my Ramos I only spent maybe 8-9 hours where my Elf banner I spent probably 25 hours and scored a bit lower. So usually somewhere between the two depending on the mini and my mindset.

My models usually take about 2 hours to paint (I think), total, more if there\'s a lot of detail, or I\'m trying to paint to a higher standard. So far my work has been getting 6-7 scores.

Course, my estimate is probably drastically off, as I usually don\'t keep track of how long I\'m painting, and I get so involved I tend to lose track of time...

For GW minis :

*) table top : 6 to 8 hours;
*) standard : 20 to 30 hours;
*) contests : 50 to 300 hours (depends if it\'s an individual or something bigger).

For detailed minis like Rackham minis, I take about twice as long.

I do minis in batches of 5 to 10. This week Im painting knoblars. Each one has 1-2hours of conversion and about 40 odd hours painting for 24 minis.

Id say 8 hours for table top and 20 hours for display (Ive only done 2 or 3 display pieces)

Sooo...
It ranges from 1 to 300 hours, pretty much what I tough :p

Guess my first try at 20hours is not so abnormal then, can\'t wait to see how it scores...

@greenstuff. Did you really ever put 300hrs on one model? I\'d like to see it.

300 is not the most extreme I\'ve heard of. I remember someone, can\'t remember who or what it was, who put about 600 hours into a GD entry.

you know, if I ever win a sword, I will gladly trade it to someone if they can find a way to add 600 hours to my year. Think about that, it\'s about 1:45 extra each day you\'d have to get stuff done for the entire year.

I\'ve never kept an accurate log of the time it took to do a mini or a historical figure but I have for some busts: the first I recorded took something over 22 hours, over a seven-day period, the second about 29-30 hours (excluding the time to strip and repaint the face after a superglue incident I don\'t want to talk about).

That\'s easy, learn to sleep less!

@GreenOne : The Emperor (it\'s in my gallery; sorry, I\'m not linking the pic, I\'ve found I get strange votes when I do that). It was my first big sculpt. So I took a lot of time thinking it out. There\'s about 4 months of sculpting (hey, I was learning ;)). I unfortunately only got 24 hours to paint it (no breaks :p). I think that was the turning point when I decided to learn NMM (was sick and tired of real metalics :p). One of my last big projects (the Vyper) took me about 200 hours.

Einion, unfortunately I\'m already down to about 4 hours a night sometimes, working 2 jobs and 15 hour days is rough!!!

Kep, No way!! I mostly am on the forums when I\'m on the clock at my day job ;)

I\'d like to know the guy that has a computer @ work and does not do it:p

I have the bad habit of picking up my brushes after 10PM so.. I don\'t sleep much either.

I count the preparation, undercoating and base work in the paint time, but I think that sculpting is in another category... The 600 hours GD entry surely was heavily converted too, cause that would be like 1 or 2 Square MM an hour... talk about patience!

Hey, on another topic, I hear it all the time, so what the hell is NMM ?

I need about 20 to 30 hours per mini and then realize that my speedpainted one that took 3 hours gets better scores. Ahem.

NMM means Non-metallic metal. This is the single most asked question on this forum, I think (aside from \"Ya think GW sucks?\"). Have a look at the article section to slate your NMM thirst for the next few millenia ;)
