Painting Plaid?

Hey there, I\'m working on the wonderful Reaper \"Gauntfield the Scarecrow\", and thought it would be cool to paint him like, well, a real scarecrow. To me, this means he should be wearing ratty bluejeans and a flannel shirt. ;)

Any advice on painting plaid? I\'m really wanting to get the \"redneck\" red & black plaid flannel shirt look for ol\' Gauntfield.

Something like this

This the shirt you are looking for?

The black is only black in certain squares. The Red is red in opposite squares.
In between it is black/red or red/black

that\'s the ticket!

Yup, that\'s exactly the kind of shirt I was looking for. Of course, I was hoping someone may have had some experience painting something like this... ;)

Still, the pic really helps. Thanks! :D

There\'s an article somewhere on the site aobut painting scottish tartans. If you skip the last steps (adding the little lines) and convert the colours to red+black it should look good.

I actually figured out how to do this when I was trying to figure out diamond patterns: Think of it as a 2 X 3 rectangle:
1 2
3 4
5 6

now, colors 1 and 5 are your lightest 2, 3, and 6 are medium between the lightest and darkest, which is 4 (usually black). Then just use this as tile in your mind and continue it.

I just painted my Neran, the scary model.I painted the shirt a mix of catachan green and black. I took my smallest brush and painted thin lines of V Dark Fleshtone, then i did vertical stripes of Catachan green mixed with snot green, then I went and did thin horizontal stripes of bubonic brown between the dark flesh stripes. I gave my scarecrow a pair of old khakis, blue jeans were a good idea.

It\'s done!

Well, I gave it a shot, and think the result came out pretty well. I really, really need to get a new camera so I can get better pix (mine is only 640x480 resolution).

Thanks for the suggestions on how to do plaid. What I wound up doing was painting the whole thing Reaper Blood Red, then did horizontal and vertical stripes in Vallejo Black Grey, then added Vallejo Black to the intersections of all the stripes. I did a wash of Vallejo Burnt Cad. Red and Smoke to give a little shading to it.
