Hi All
Well basically I just have a simple question.
I only got started into this hobby about 9 months ago and am still learning all kinds of things when it comes to painting, highlights etc. and due to still not having tons of painting knowledge the question I wanted to ask was \" What color should I use to highlight black armor etc. and whats the best technique to use to get the best lookinh results?

Thanks: Meridian

Hi,

there is a simple rule.
If you like to paint black don\'t paint black.

For instance if you like to paint black hair mix first the black with blue and a bit white and then highlight with a mix of more blue and white up to a pale grey or a pale blue grey.

This works with all colors but the best effects i got starting with a mix of
black, blue and white or a mix with black and white but mixes with black white and brown or red is working as well depending what kind of effect you like to see.

HTH
Cheers Stefan

if you want to paint black dont paint black ???

umm there are a couple of ways to paint black

version one:-
-base coat black, paint the edges with a mix of regal blue and black (50,50).
-paint the edges regal blue ( although closer to the edge this time).
-mix shadow grey & regal blue (50,50), and paint the edges (closer to the edge again, leaving some of the other colours visible).
-continue the steps above until you go from 100% shadow grey up to spaceswolf grey, then make a wash of chaos black (1 part paint, 10+ parts water) over the whole area.

i hope that helps to answer your question

chris

p.s. you can do the above technique but using greys instead of blues,,,so you could use codex grey and fortress grey,,,or if you want a softer shade,,,,add bleached bone to black for successive highlights

black is a toughie (as is white) because you obviously can\'t shade it. be careful with your highlighting as it is easy to make it look grey. if you want it to look shinier, use lighter colours to highlight. you can use lots of colors to highlight depending on what sort of hue you want to give it. the best example i have seen of black armour is brokenblade\'s emperors champ:

if you look at it, he uses very little black - mostly greys. awesome

Yeah, gorgeous!

Alexi uses similar effects:

I think you have to bear in mind though that that sort of smoothness is fricking hard to pull off!

Razza uses sharp highlights of Space Wolves Grey in a just as effective, but simpler way:

That, I find, is much easier :D

Jakob Nielsen is awesome at painting blacks too, and has a great tutorial on his website, http://jrn-works.dk/.

there isn\'t really a \"right\" answer as such - just find what suits you best.
