Can you give some details of what you did and how you failed?

Did the red go muddy over a black undercoat?
Pink over a white one?

Explainerate! :D

hopefully this will help dan (great name btw)

it went very very shinney and \"tacky\" looking; probably more my painting skills over the actual colours but the red just looked...well crap

was afew coats of scab red over a black undercoat. then 50/50 scab red/red gore. then straight red gore and afew coats with red ink in between layers

am i even using the right colours to acheive a tired, matt red colour???

I imagine the shiny effect is being caused by the red ink wash - your method sounds fine to me - although even scab red can look a little muddy over black - I tend to put a brown over black undercoat for reds - even just a layer of bestial should pick it up that bit more.

Also, make sure your layers are fully dry between each coat.

Try painting a deep purple down first and then the red over the top. THe issue with both red and yellow is the the molecules (Don\'t say a word about my spelling! ;) ) that reflect both colors are big compaired to other colors. Because of this the color underneith shows through and you have to do 5x more coats to get a true color. If you do a base of deep purple under red you keep the shadowy effect that black primer gives but because purple has red in it when the purple shows through it doesn\'t distort the color as much. Thats how I did the red on this

I started with the purple and actually ended up with an orange for the highlights.

Im no expert (see my minis for proof of that statement) but GW terracotta or dark flesh as a basecoat is the method i use for reds. Build up from there

Lizcam is pretty close to the accuracy of the problem with the description of the molecule issue.

Try mixing Scab Red with Scorched Brown and a tiniest amount of Chaos Black for the base coat then work up through the reds. I used it for the Sister of Battle painting guide I helped with for White Dwarf a few years ago.

I use Scab Red over Scorched Brown (GW) or Sanguine Base (P3) to start, then add more and more Blood Red and layer that on. Ending with pure Blood Red. For extreme edges I add a yellow/orange colour from P3 (Heartfire or something like that).

Check my gallery for how this looks, the latest Griffon Templar is the first I used the Yellow/Orange combo for the extreme highlights, the beastman and older Griffon Templar would show the effect skipping this final step.

I use sanguine base from P3 as a base for my reds. Lately I have been adding P3 Coal Black (which is kind of a dark blue/green) as the shade and highlighting all the way up to Reaper master series Bright Red. A couple of coats of Baal Red (citadel wash) and it really seems to pop.

careful about rubbing those brains cells. i did that once and it.... uhm...

I also use a lot of dark purples for my reds. It makes a great shade color. I\'ll also use some earthy browns mixed in with reds. I believe I used Vallejo Model Color Burnt Cad. Red 70814 as the darkest shade for this model mixed 3:1 with just a black.

Regardless of how much black I added though, the Burnt Cadmium Red does make a good base color.

I\'ve got some decent results with just merchite red, then devlan mud wash, blood red, a very small blazing orange highlight, and lastly a baal red wash. Not quite the tired red you want though... I guess you could go merchite red, then maybe 2 devlan mud washes, a little blood red and a baal red wash. Maybe a badab black wash if its not dark enough in the recesses. These are all pretty quick easy methods too.
