Painting room stuff

My partial success at GD today has inspired me to be more serious about my painting. The first thing will be to have a whole room devoted to painting. That is why I now ask, what do you guys think are neccesities in a painting room? (besides the obvious)

A big flat screen TV with a DVD player and plenty of DVDs so you can screw off and watch movies and wait till the last minute to paint your demon entries :)

CD player for background. I would NOT have my computer next to my paint station or I would not get anything done.

Oh yeah, good call on the fridge!

I also keep all my rulebooks and supplements handy near my painting area. Sometimes good for inspiration but especially good if you decide to build something and you have to check the game legality of it.

I also make sure I have a phone or something handy so I don\'t lose complete touch with the earth.

Make some room..

I really think a good indoor plant on your painting desk/table is great. I have a nice vine like plant that grows in water (no need for soil) and she grows out of a nice small green glass bottle. She\'s growing all over my pencils and stationary. It really does make a difference to my working environment.

Also, put some stuff up on your wall like framed diplomas/paintings/wall hangings etc. It\'s nice.

You could also paint the walls and ceilings in your paint room. This is my plan for next month. I\'ll be painting the room green (with a spot of purple added to the green to soften it), I also plan on carefully spraying a stencil motif/pattern around the part where the wall meets the ceiling. I think this will create a very cool painting room.

One last thing. I have little trinkets on my painting desk. Precious stones, little glass dolphin\'s etc. This also makes it more comfortable for me.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

And congrats on your success at GD!

Comfortable chair, plenty of light, Natural and Daylight simulation.
Storage for Tools, basing materials, unpainted mini\'s etc...
A cheap hairdryer, speeds up drying washes.
A good working table which you must keep clear. (Yeah right, practise what you preach Mike)
Cutting mat.
Radio/CD/MP3 player isn\'t a neccessity, but does sometimes help lift my mood when I\'m painting.

If you can keep an area free to set up a photo shoot station then that is a serious bonus.

that\'ll be the 3 inch area I managed to squeez a figure and pot of paint onto the other year then

Cutting mat.
What cutting mat I didn\'t see that unless you had it under all the other stuff or have you bought one since?

There were two, as cunningly camoflaged as possible.

I know some of these have been said but these are what I have and are very useful.

Telephone- so you dont have to get up to answer the phone

Plenty of light- I have two lamps that have white bulbs so i can see the paint as it is

A nice desk- so you dont have to hunch over to paint

A paint wheel- So all your paints stay organized

Lots of drawers- so you can keep all of your supplies oganized

Display case- to keep all of your painted minis from collecting dust and for some quick inspiration (i got one from Ikea for $50 and it is amazing)

Music Device- helps me keep my focus

And anything else you might like! Try to keep the clutter off your work area becaus it is often distracting

Mostly already mentioned, but:

Decent lighting
Paint storage to hand
Brush storage to hand
Comfy chair, fully adjustable if possible
Somewhere safe where you can place a drink
Warmth, no good trying to paint if your chilly
Inspiration, magazines, photos, computer
Somewhere to place finished minis, out of harms way
Somewhere to place unfinished minis, out of harms way
Sweets (ok, maybe just me)

storage is a must. for books (for inspiration), models, stuff you are actually modelling, tools etc

i like to have a dvd player, tv and music, just something noisy on in the background. it\'s a good time to listen to all those dvd commentaries!

good lighting is a must

*edit, i need my comp too. that way you can access cmon and other inspiration

that\'s pretty much the basics as far as I\'m concerned:
a nice lamp (i use a halogen desk light, somehow its less forgiving, even less than daylight. if it looks smooth under that lamp, it IS smooth)
all my paints and bits
all my codices and WD\'s
something \"far off\", to refocus/relax my eyes
something to distract me (but something i can easily manipulate, so not a PC, which, at the moment, is pretty much the center of my painting area) like the TV, helps me relax my eyes, and my brains.
some additional space for anything else that happens to have your fancy at that moment

so, basically, everything you\'ve ever used when painting, and everything you might use in the future, and everything you haven\'t thought off yet.... or forgot since.....

Paintcraft.

Something like this would be cool. http://www.theage.com.au/news/technology/world-of-warcraft-goes-down-the-toilet/2009/05/08/1241727593209.html

Just remove the Warcrack game and you\'d be rockin\'!

Here\'s what I can think of off the top of my head:

Must-have
Storage space. And then some more storage. And some shelves.
Walls white or light grey.
A suitable work surface, multi-level ideally (computer desks can work well).
A good chair, preferably with armrests, that suits the height of your table/bench.
Cork board for pinning up sketches, inspiring artwork, reference photos.
Main room light + at least one task light (preferably using the same bulb/tube type).
Hairdryer.
Ideally not carpeted; vinyl or linoleum would be good.

Given all the web-based help and digital guides and images a computer could be argued to be a must... if you lack impulse control and it would be a major distraction that\'s your problem :D

Optional
Display cabinet.
Spray area/spray booth.
Dedicated photo area with lights.
Enough shelf space to store all your reference materials.

I think you have already been \"taking painting seriously\" if you\'ve had a result at GD.

Your post reminds me of a piece in \"On Writing\", by Stephen King. Now, the book is about writing fiction, but the part I recall is very relevant.

When talking about where and how he has done his writing over the years, he charts a full circle. He started with a tiny desk under the slanted ceiling of his childhood bedroom, where he would sit and write for the love of writing, listening to the wind howling through the eaves and enjoying the betterment of his craft.

He grew older, got a day job, had a family, and wrote Carrie on a typewriter balanced on his knees in the back of his trailer park home when he had ten minutes spare.

From here, we know the story. Success came, and one day he sat down with his wife and he said, \"You know, now I\'m a serious writer, I\'m gonna have a study! A whole room for my writing!\" So he got a room, with a giant desk right in the middle of the room that he would sit behind while he was taking his writing seriously...

To cut a fifty page narrative short, he forgot to love his craft while he was taking it so seriously, and these days, he\'s back at a little desk in the corner, under the eaves, writing for writing\'s sake.

Some more space is always useful, and you deserve it, maybe you even NEED it - but don\'t lose sight of why you got so good in the first place - you clearly love to paint, and are doing very well without all the seriousess. =)

Now teach me how to paint as well as you damn it!! =)

---

\"So okay - there you are in your room with the shade down and the door shut and the plug pulled out the base of your telephone. You\'ve blown up your TV and committed yourself to an hour\'s painting a day, come hell or high water. Now comes the question: what are you going to paint? And the equally big answer: Anything you damn well like. Anything at all ... so long as you enjoy it.\"
