anyone got a decent recipe for painting grey stone. the stone on my particular project at the current time will b part of a snow base, im guessing that means no green washes/shades?..

i would suggest painting it in greys. start dark and highlight lighter. dude that seems a pretty dumb question! one thing i will add though, try and use a small amount of brown if you can, it makes it look more realistic

That\'s a bit harsh Freak. Realistic stone is actually pretty tough to achieve. Washes of brown, red and green can get you some good effects. I\'d stay away from blue and purple in stone for the most part, unless you want a magicky kind of look.

If you look up some rocky landscapes in Google or something you might find something with a nice bit of variation in the rock colors.

I have a method that is preety basic but might help. I paint the rock in grey, then I give a wash with black ink and finally I dry-brush it with white ink. It is very fast and looks good.

My recipe: basecoat in Vallejo German uniform, drybrush 2 or 3 times with GW Space wolves grey, then another very light drybrush with GW fortress grey. Add a few splashes of GW washes ,dosent matter what colour..its just to give it some un-uniformity (is that even a real word?) You know what i mean though.
Finally give it a coat of thinned GW Devlan Mud wash.

Looks ace as far as im concerned

Grey Stone? Slate, Flint, Granite What type?

Stone comes in a huge variation of tones some caused by mineral deposits in the stone being leeched out by water and some caused by water crossing the stone and allowing algeal growth to form close to the water margin.
Dont rule out browns or greens just because you are putting snow on a base. Snow covers stuff it doesn\'t wipe it away.

It\'s true. I added some snow flock to my Warrior Priest model, the one standing on some greenish slate rocks, and it looks just fine. If it balances out with the other colors on the model, then it won\'t matter much how you tint the rocks.

Again, I just don\'t think that blues and purples show up in natural rock very often. It\'s possible, just not common :p

More common than you think :D:p
Both Welsh and Cumbrian Slate has a soft Purple colour, which can be seen in a lot of places where it is used as a \"decorative\" ground covering.
In fact GW has a huge amount of slate immediatly in front of their Space Marine Statue at Lenton. (Hope you get the chance to see for yourself).
