Painting teams

I wonder whether all painters should have to pass a skill based exam. A bit like a driving test.

This will weed out those not capable of winning.
Those who are left should then have to join a team just like the pro sports teams.

I think this can only help to improve the hobby and mean the quality of entries in competitions can improve.

I would like to officially announce the pre-booking of the name. \"team nigel\"
After a rigorous entrance exam I will start to formulate my uber painting team.

I will be paying particular attention to excellence oin certain areas. Such as.
Mettalics.... hyper realistic
Nmm
senmm
washes
juices
squeezes
drips
drops
basework
groundwork
slate work
grass work
sculpting
tweaking
twonking
cheating
All those interested please pm me.

(For the Glory of the Reich I claim this Daemon! etc etc).

??? So being part of a team is like being a Nazi for the glory of the Reich...? WOW! Interesting choice of words...

When I win a prize it is mine. I win as Mathieu Fontaine. But at the end it\'s always interesting to see how your group did just like any other sport group would do after a competition.

As for what Jeff Wilhem just mentioned I mostly agree. It is sad to see people constantly trying to brush off the \"top\" painters to hopefully have a shot. First time I won a demon I knew full well I was against Jeremie\'s main entry. Did I start whining and gave up? No! I pushed myself to the max trying to do the impossible. I did not beat him but I improved and learned a LOT in the process. Like any other discipline you get to the top after hours and hours of dedicated work and effort. There is no other secret!

Yes, that\'s exactly what I\'m saying, spot on.....or... Reich

Talonicus - that idea may have merit, thought it should probably be discussed in a different thread. I had intended this thread to be about Nationalistic trends in the GDs.

Dragon Forge - thanks for the explanation. I have seen all of those arguments. Like you I think they\'re mostly ridiculous, though I like the Slayer Sword being restricted to Open for next year\'s comp - you will be aware of the arguments for and against (did they do this? I can\'t remember).

I\'m not sure how we have gotten onto percieved un-fairness in painting competitions. I have used the word \"Nationalism\" a few times (in all my posts I think), but not \"fair\", \"unfair\", \"win\", or \"lose\".

Fwiw I think the bit where you said \"Would team Bob be ok?\" is a lot closer to the conversation I had in mind when I started the thread, but my original intentions have somehow been misinterpruted along the way.

This always happens in the \"can-o-worms\" threads (and most other threads in general chat). Don\'t take it too seriously.

I fully agree with your original post. I know I didn\'t interpret your Reich comment as something affiliated with Nazis, although it does appear that others jumped to conclusions.

teams - painting, dancing, everywhere

Several years ago when I was going to dance competitions (and, yes, competing), I discovered that the Canadian dancers all had the same jacket, and they cheered very loudly when one of their number was on the floor.

The dancers from Northern California decided to get in on the act, so they all got the same jacket. And then, all the students of my coach got the same colored jacket.

We all competed against one another, but we all knew one another and trained with one another.

It was a competition inside a competition. Sort of like the Olympics. If you\'re gonna take silver, you hope a teammate takes gold.

Granted, the dance community has it\'s own issues that I hope to God the painting community doesn\'t have.

Cheers,
Doug

Or misinterpeted the comment?

Anyways, the whole issue can\'t be taken too seriously as the teams themselves aren\'t taken as seriously as TS finds them to be. Teams hold seminars, compete as regularily as they find fit, but most of all, push the level of everyone by working together and demonstrating what teamwork can achieve. Case and point, if Team Montreal hadn\'t been created (the first huge step being bringing Jeremie over to learn as a team) then GD Canada would\'ve been at the same stage it was 4-5 years ago.

I hope that all made sense, I\'m a little bit frazzled by all these other posts by people who obviously don\'t understand the positive efforts of some very noble organizations.

I really think his comment is taken out of context.

This has been an interesting thread.

I am not a member of any team; I have not been invited to be, nor do I expect to be. However, when TNA, and Team Montreal came in Friday evening, a lot of us got together, and we stayed together throughout the Games Day. Before hanging with these guys and gals, I actually kind of thought it was like a painting SWAT team. I found out VERY quickly that it\'s just a bunch of friends that get together on occasion, and share similar goals...what\'s wrong with that?

A few of the members of Team Montreal have been helping me improve my skills over the last 2 years, and I owe all my Demon wins to them...Starks3333 in particular. All he was saying is that this group of \"friends\" took most of the trophies home with them, and quite frankly, I\'m honored that they even included me in that count, and mentioned me...the Golden Demons ARE about recognition, are they not? I felt like I was in the midst of the hobby\'s greatest painters, and I think I was right. To a guy like me, painters like Mathieu, and Vincent H. are like a kid\'s favorite baseball player, and I was fully expecting a \"hi, nice to meet you, now run along\" from them. Nothing was further from the truth, and actually, the level of humility was unexpected, and refreshing.

Slamming these teams for the suspected \'rail-roading\' of a competition is like slamming your favorite sports team...but, you have to remember that individual efforts collaborate to gain some team recognition.

If \'you\' want recognition, try harder. Some days your best loses, and your substandard wins...I am proof of this.

As far as I know, the main reason for forming communities based on nationality (or belonging to a certain city) is that the members should have a somewhat reasonable chance to actually come together and meet in person a few times each year (or more, if that\'s feasable). Speaking the same language is also a good thing.

Once the community is formed it\'s no stranger that members will cheer for each other than it is for you to cheer for you brother or sister in a competition. It\'s people you know and care about.

I haven\'t seen much in the way of true nationalism from people in the hobby, either members of any teams or no.

@ Akaranseth - The canadian painting team I was talking about was yours, Team Montreal. I know that they have a large amount of people in their community but I am not sure how many other painting groups carry themselves in the same manner.

@ Dragon Forge - I hate to burst your bubble but I am not bothered by your groups abilities to win Demons nor am I jealous and bitter. Chris Borer is one of the people in your group that I admire and who I believe deserves every demon he wins. The problem is that you think you are just in assuming that I \"whine\" because of a lack of talent but it is just not true :p I give an opinion based on observation and I see a large some of the people in your group to be nothing more than people who have won demons countless times.

Just so you are aware I have won demons and will continue to do so as well as improve my painting. Thanks for the advice and your belittlement ;)

I do agree with you though that the competition should not be dumbed down. If I am going to compete I want to be up against the best. If I am not than I would not be comfortable accepting an award for such a competition.

We should all just start a coolminiornot group that way it includes everyone and then no one will have a reason to complain about groups cheating and winning every competition because we would all be in the same group supporting each other and winning. Too much segregation with the groups.

Actually...I think CMON team would be kinda cool...and you\'d probably see TNA, TC, and others welcoming you and the \"team\" to the competition.

I am curious though...how does someone \"cheat\" at a Demon comp?

I didn\'t meet a single Team Montreal member (or TNA) that carried themselves in any way other than respectfully, and friendly...of course, peoples\' online identities are so much more accurate than their real-life personalities...

My guess would be someone might think that multiple people worked on one entry. I would never think any of the top painters would cheat though.

The only cheaters are those random chumps who enter nice minis they bought off eBay.

I am all for a global \"team\". But that\'s sort of what we have here (the rating system, WIP forum and painting/discuss submissions forums).

My issue is when these teams take the name of the nation they are from, and are incredibly exclusive. It\'s one thing if it\'s a friendly group of people striving to get better at things. It\'s another if there are just a very small handful acting as if they are the only representatives from where they reside.

In my mind something such as \"Team North America\" (I\'m going to pick on you folks just as an example, don\'t take it personally! :) )should be something that anyone living in North America would be able to join (or anyone else for that matter I suppose). I feel that something named that should be representing all of North America, not just an exclusive branch of a few painters. Stuff like that alienates people. This hobby is meant to bring people together.

Something like \"Bob\'s group-o painters\" could be as exclusive as the team wants. I\'m not opposed to this stuff at all. If people want to group together to share advise and get better at painting then go for it. No one can stop you. :)

There\'s my 2 cents. Or 3. :)

EXACTLY!!! With a name like team north america I assume that means that it encompasses people from every state of the country. As cheesy as it sounds it makes sense. If the name is to be that generic then more people should be involved.

I am sorry guys, but I find this position to be highly illogical. Let me stress this: neither of you, who complained about teams or the name of the team attempted so far to organize a team. They did it first; if they want to be named in a specific way it is their right. I you want to organize something (for whatever purpose) you can call is THE REAL North American team.
USA National Basketball team does not include all people who plays basketball, and I am sure that they don\'t have player from all 50 states, yet they call themselves NAtional Basketball team.

Seriously though, what exactly bothers you the name or the fact that the group of like-minded people tend to, well..., group together??

I\'m debating whether to call my newly formed team \"Team Western Hemisphere\" or \"Team Northern Hemisphere\"... I\'ve got to figure out which hemisphere is the \"enemy\" hemisphere first, I think... lol

Yes, there is an air of exclusivity to the idea of something like Team North America, but I think that\'s because they\'re so darn good. It certainly isn\'t because they are snooty or anything... every last one of them I\'ve spoken to has been quite nice. It seems more like a social vehicle between some excellent painters rather than some kind of sinister Masonic painting cult determined to crush all others by cornering the market on dry-brushed resin demons.

this is aimed at the topic and not any one in particular

i can\'t be arsed writing a realy long reply so here goes.

some people cheat, some work hard
some work in groups getting advice on their entry and some work alone.

if you want a demon that bad then paint your arse off, learn every trick in the book.
look at the upcoming releases (as gd is all about advertisement to increase sales in certain areas) and aim your idea around that.
then enter as many gd\'s in a year as you can afford to get to.

that\'s the formula for the trophy hunters.
bloody simple realy.

Hey everyone, calm down! Plant a tree! It\'s so much more worthwhile. So what if people are patriotic in their painting groups? It\'s the same as sport isn\'t it? All good fun and a drink afterwards. Cheer up!

team painters

Fun thread...anyway, heres my two cents.

I have no problem with a skilled team of painters rolling into a comp. and winning the demons...they wanted it more and put more time and effort into it.
good for them.
But,I can see how this can be frustrating to newer painters who look at the same names again and again and know that they have little chance to ever make the 1st cut.
Yes, they can work their collective butts off and improve in the long run but it is disheartening.
I\'ve been particularly lucky to be able to tap the skills of a local painter (Sean Kilgore) who\'s got a few demons himself, but most people don\'t have that option..and to be frank, reading techniques off a web page and learning from a real person is similar to learning karate in a school or aping motions they see in a Steven Seagal movie.
If you really want to solve the team \"problem\", simply make a category for the teams to compete in.
I think the elites have more than enough pull w/ GW to make this a possibility and it would dispose of the unfair mentality.
Platinum Demons?

Oh yeah..I\'m with LakeSwatt
We took 1 (best group table) of the numerous obscure secondary awards at GD Chicago. Fear our unfair collective table making powers puny mortals!!
Look out best banner/costume/dance moves..We\'re comin\' for ya!!! lol
