Painting the Dirz resin Statuette

Okay, I\'m putting myself in line for a daunting task... Painting this monstrosity (but monstrosity in a good way):

BUSTE_SC01_1.jpg

Now are there things to take in account when painting resin or larger figures?
And what do you people suggest as colour-scheme?

Maybe you could PM Philippe... He seems to be used to larger busts...

As for the painting scheme... IMHO,maybe a dark blue / blackened armor, the skin covered in bruises, burns and so on... Fresh scars...

Holey moley!

That is a monster! How large is it Tuubje? It is hard to tell from the image and I have never seen one IRL.

Looking at it I am thinking, scab red, green and bronze metal bits with a pewter stand....???

I am also thinking airbrush....;)

It\'s 27 cm\'s high with the standard

And I suck at airbrush, never really given myself to learn it on a decent level.

And I said it would be challenging :D Time to get my hands dirty ;)

27cm, that\'s big. I would say definately avoid metallics on a model this size. I have a feeling they wouldn\'t look good on large areas

As the title suggests, metallics are fin on such a large scale, in fact, they will look better than NMM (IMHO), because of the larger size and hence more capacity to render truer to life-like. A bust of this size will show obvious signs of misdirected light from an NMM perspective, because the point of view changes greatly. Use JRN\'s technique for shading and highlighting the metallics and you\'ll be pleasantly surprised. :)

Oooh good luck!

This is a superb statue Tuubje and I wish you loads of luck painting it! I really want it myself, but it\'s sooooo expensive :(

I think lots of \'mouldy\' colours like blues/greens/purples etc to make him look suitably icky but with really striking armour :D

If you don\'t use an airbrush, I suggest oils. We debated about if this is good for the resin on another thread, and I believe it was Vinyls that make the pait go bad.. Anyways, if you\'re not going to airbrush, Metallics is also good, especially those alcohol based ones, but agin, make sure it\'s primed good because paint thinner and resin don\'t mix. Doing it by hand will take a LOT of time, but then so would masking if you were airbrushing. I really want to do my Mid Nor resin, but in winter, it\'s not a good time to spray paint that\'ll just freeze before it gets to the mini!

Yeh, ask Philippe, his skin-tones that he uses for barbarians are perfect for this piece.....I\'m also thinking kinda rusty red metal would look good.....

??? Uuhh Chrispy...... Dude.......

YOU ARE IN EL PASO TEXAS!!! Did I miss the polar inversion or what?:p

No, El Paso is hot, but that just means fall and spring are just put into summer. I think yesterday it was 85 and today the low was 60. Also, we get a lot of wind, and since there\'s no water in teh soil, the dust is just kicked around in the wind, so it\'s not really Aibrushin\' weather, unless I can get the garage to myself.

What\'s JRN\'s technique? And actually I want to make the armour coloured, but I\'m mixing with metallic agent, so the colour will become metallic.

JRN\'s Technique

Not that I am an expert, but I will try to answer your question:

Jakob Nielson (JRN) [and I do apologize for any mispellings :(] uses multiple layers of colored inks to add depth and color to his metallics. I\'m not sure if he belongs to CMoN, but he regularly posts to mini-painter on Yahoo. His minis are truly beautiful examples of how metallics can be rendered. Another source for pictures would be White Dwarf GD UK coverage. Hope this helps.

Here\'s some examples:

UK%201998%20warhammer%20monster%201%20Jakob%20Nielsen.jpg

too bad you can\'t see it too well on these scans, but if you have the mag from 1998, he won in the UK.

Ah yes, I remember that lord of change, I love the helmet, so much beter than the one they put onto the official model when they updated

IIRC he uses lots of layers of brown and green inks, and stipples the metallics on rather than just brushing them on

How difficult can it belol

He also won the sword this year for a group of chaos knights. So check out this years coverage on the stuff of legends site.

He uses Tamiya clear paints (they are kind of like inks but more gloopy and dry quite glossy).

Regards

Kat
