Painting the monolith

I know I\'ve seen this before, but I\'ve been searching for a while and still can\'t find any information on the subject so I\'ll ask it here: How does one go about about painting the monolith?
I recently tossed one into my army since the new rules make it look so juicy, but it\'s a bit, well, bigger than I expected. I\'d never seen one assembled before and to be honest it seems rather daunting... Any help is greatly appreciated!

Difficult question to answer.. It depends on the rest of the army, the look you want and such. If it should be clean or if it should have wear and tear etc. Come up with some kind of concept of what you want and maybe we can help you better. One idea would be to search these galleries for a Monolith you like and then either PM the painter or ask how he/she has done it here...

Yeah and welcome to the forums! :)

My apologies, I do realize how incredibly vague my original question was... But to fill you in a bit more, my Necrons are pretty standard I think... Actually they\'re very simplistic, just a base of chaos black highlighted with boltgun metal to give it a worn kind of effect, with a mithril silver gun that\'s had a black ink wash. Plus the standard green details on the eyes, gun, and chest of course. My destroyers and wraiths have some white w/varnish on their shoulders too. I never got into the rusty scheme since having living metal oxidize didn\'t make much sense to me...
Currently I\'m torn between doing a white or off-white monolith similar to the one Agacia posted (without a ton of detail like that though, I\'m not THAT good yet) but I also love the \'standard\' colors for the lith presented in the codex and on the box. I\'m also considering varnishing (after doing a base of chaos and the details of course) to give it an appearance similar to that of Necron architecture described in various black library publications. But whichever scheme I do end up going with I have a couple major questions:
1- Should I be watering down my paints at all like I would for smaller units? Or does it\'s size make that a headache?
2- Is there any way to darken up the crystal n\' portal with a wash or something? They just seem a bit too bright for my taste... More like something you\'d find in a toy store rather than on a battle field.
Thanks for the welcome and the help too. I\'ll make sure I post pics of how it turns out when I\'m done. :)

With a blowtorch! :flame: Gah I hate :cussing: necrons lol

1. ALWAYS water down your paints really - the only I wouldn;t bother would be for putting a base coat on terrain, as you WANT that textured and streaky.

Of course, as the monolith is quite a big piece, I wouldn\'t water it down to GLAZE level lol

2. Do you mean that clear green plastic?
I\'m wondering if you could dip it in some wash to darken it, but I\'m not sure if it would stick... ???

Thank you for your help! And yeah, I know, lots of people hate crons and I can definitely see why. But before I started playing I spent almost six or seven months just trying to chose an army... Researching tactics, unit abilities, army fiction/fluff, trying to figure out who the hell I wanted to side with. I had it whittled down a select few. The Tau\'s ranged combat would have suited me nicely, but I didn\'t like the idea of relying on a couple units of troops to do virtually all the cqc for me. On the other hand, the Tyranid horde aspect was very alluring... Yet I still wasn\'t up to the daunting task of painting (or buying) such a vast army. The witch/daemon hunters had a very nice overall look and feel along with a rich back story; but didn\'t suit my play style well... And finally there were the Necrons, who get the least love in the 40k universe.
I fell in love them immediately...
They have a small unit selection that at the same time is just diverse enough for me. A pretty simplistic look that I find very fun to paint, since it can be detailed, or very plain depending on your taste. And they\'re a churning meat grinder that\'s tough as nails in the right hands (and I\'ll admit, a little luck). My only complaint was they WERE a bit slow, but with the new \'run\' rule for infantry- problem solved. Not to mention the monolith is now a true force to be reckoned with, which is why I\'m now finally adding one! :)

Where was I? Oh yes...

I certainly would NOT be watering down my paints to a glaze level in either case lol Usually I like to stick to the consistency of milk for most stuff; better to do multiple coats than one, thick, ugly, brush line filled streak no? And yes, I\'m considering doing an ink wash or pretty diluted coat of chaos black on the clear green plastic parts (portal/top crystal). I assume it would stick since I wash the pieces in a lightly soapy pool of water before painting anything. I do this while all the pieces are still on the spurs (it\'s easier that way) and it any residual mold release off that still may be hanging on.

With the Green Plastic, try coating with a Matt spray varnish, this will turn it somewhat milky in appearance.
You can then use thin washes of paint to enforce a darker area at the base of the Crystal.

Thanks! I never would have thought of a dull coat first! I can\'t believe I missed that. lol
But that\'s actually the exact type of look I wanted. I\'ll probably fade it a bit like you said but darken it overall; it just looks too bright... Like it would be more suited as a neon \"eat at joe\'s\" sign than an instrument of death.
