I use Citadel and Geo-Hex paints (Regal Realms & Howard Hues ).

Lately I use Howard Hues alot because of the earth tone that they have (less saturation), and cheap, too! can\'t beat $1.95 for 1floz bottle :bouncy:

But for gems or any contrast/bright color, I use Citadel. They have a good crisp bright color choices.

I have a Mish Mosh...

I use about 70% Citadel,
25% Vallejo (Hopefully these two will switch :p), 2% Reaper, 2.5% Americana Arcylic, and one bottle of Liqutex.

I love the Vallejo, Citadel Bottles are hard to open and mix with :flame: , Reaper paints can be too gummy. Americana needs to be watered down a bit, but the large bottles are good for terrain, Liqutex needs several coats (this could be because it\'s yellow), but it mixes good.

Andrea Paints Review

After having no luck finding Vallejo paints in my area I decided to try the Andrea brand paints from a local hobby store specializing in historical models and diaramas (Spl?). I thought about ordering Vallejo online but wanted to some painting that night.

The store owner said that many of his customers say that it is very comparable to Vallejo as far as pigmentation, the eyedrop cap etc...

I also found the Andrea website. Andrea is a company out of Portugal that manufactures historical miniatures so I figured what the heck. No one else here posted that they had used them or heard of them so I am taking Coyote\'s suggestion a posting a quick review.

Of course I cannot compare them to Vallejo but over all I was pleased with them. They don\'t have near the color range that Vallejo has and since they are made by a historical mini manufacturer their colors have names like Japanese Khaki instead of say Bubonic Brown. Napolionic Blue in lieu of Regal Blue.

They go on smooth and don\'t seem grainy and run about 2.15 a bottle. The eyedropper cap is the kicker for me and was the reason I was lookinjg for Vallejo in the first place.

The only problem seemed to be the shelf life of some of the metallics. The owner told me he pulled the copper wells due to serious clumping which neither water nor stirring could help. I had this problem with the gold. It seemed a milky blue with the gold flickering clumps hear and there. I added a wee bit of water and stirred the thing like crazy to no avail. Returned it with no problem.

This might have been a case of the paint sitting in a warehouse for a while before even getting to the store. He has had the same rack for a year without reordering anything so that might be it or maybe Andrea\'s metallics just don\'t have the shelf life the other colors do. My silver and gun metal however were fine.

Over all i liked them but I think I will order some Vallejo in another month as that seems to be the favorite of the high quality paints.

Well, I would say the one big advantage Andrea has over Vallejo is that you aren\'t ordering colours blind.

Sure, you can get a sheet showing the various Vallejo colours, or find websites with the same online.

However, unless you\'ve seen the colour in person, you just don\'t know what it is.

Like, right now I have no Vallejo red, because what I thought was the red I wanted was orange. It said it was orange, but I didn\'t believe it (Vallejo colour names are a little inventive at times)

Thank you for the review though Haiden. Sounds like they\'re at least a better buy then Citadel. :)

I\'ve been picking up paints as needed, with a large amount of earthtones. I still have a fair number of RP paints, and jealously guard my True Blue since I havent found a match in any other paint yet. There are also some Poly S, and I am steadily collecting Citadels.
Because I was previously in an area that had no wargame shops. I learned from experimentation that squeeze top acrylics from craft stores, such as Ceramcoat works suprisingly well and are good workhorse paints for R&F and vehicles when used with the standard mini paints. (test first, some shades wash about as good as RP leather :|~
For my part, i will give Vallejo and Americana a try.

I use whatever works!

that said, Ceramcoat works very well... I have no problems with Pro Paint, I tried Vallejo and was unimpressed, and used RP as my sand in for years. I have found that Pro Paints do the job I need them to do rather well, and are not chalky.

Now Citadel, well the old line was far better... and the new line is crap... no other way of putting it. Though they do have a couple shades that I cannot avoid but to pick and hope the colors will not dry.

I use Citadel and now mostly Vallejo. Armoury, Ral Partha (fleshes mostly) and even Polly S get used on occasion - though that\'s becoming increasingly rare ...

whatever is for sale

I\'m cheap (or poor) I use whatever I can afford when I need more paint.

I use AppleBarrel - They are crap paint, but since I bought them I will use them. In their defense, they do have a few really good colors that paint well and I rely on heavily, but it\'s a crap shoot when you get a set of 20 paints.

Red, Blue and Yellow from Howard Hues -bought long ago as a basis for doing everything (also bought black and white but they ran out/dried up) Decent and bright.

Poly-S \"worm purple\" because it was the only purple the store had at the time.

Finally Citadel. I ran out of black and found the most economical way to replace it was actually to buy a starter set on eBay. This is the best black I have ever used.

Matt varnish

Hoi all,
while talking about paints, can anybody recommend a really matte varnish, whether acrylic or enamle paints. My old sir complains that every matt varnish he tried in reality had that silken matte finish, which admittedly doesn\'t look that good on his 1/48 scale military mini\'s
Thx a lot in advance!

I work mostly with Citadel\'s (the older kind mostly, thank God), some Pro paints, and only one Vallejo (Red).

I also picked up some Tamiya acryllics, wich are great to work with, and that I got very cheap (think $1.90 a bottle).

I use artist\'s matte and glossy spray for sealing, and generic primer (white or grey do well for me).

50% Vallejo
40% Citadel
10% Other (Ral Partha, Polly S, Armoury, Howards Hues, Testors, or Tamiya depending on what I\'m doing)

I need more Dark Greens and Dark Browns and Reds to use Vallejo exclusively . . .some day . . .

Vallejo\'s White and Black can\'t be beat!
