Maybe I gotta catch up with the times.

liquitex acrylic artist colors, americana craft paint (black/white), citadel blood red.

How is vallejo? What is the closest comparison (polly S, citadel, reaper)?

When I painted on canvas with acrylics, I also used Liquitex and always found them quite nice. Now the only time I use them is for painting dioramas and stuff like that. So, I haven\'t used them for a wash in a long time. I will say that the vallejo paints are very pigment-rich and make painting w/ washes a joy.

Vallejo
OLD, OOP Citadel
Coat d\'Arms
Reaper
Americana asphultum for painting brown bases. (i added this particular color and brand since I use it on all my minis bases. 79 cents for 2oz. can\'t go wrong)

each paint line has their own characteristics and I\'ll use what I feel is right for whichever part I\'m working on.

Vallejos are highly pigmented, so they cover *very well*
While the reaper paints (to me anyhow) are a bit more transparent.
thats a fairly blanket statement, so don\'t think it covers every color in every line.

I think each brand of paint has their own learning curve, and each one might suit differant people better.

Reaper paints are about as transparent as the liquitex, but are pretty grainy in comparison. I don\'t really like them overall. How is the grain in the Vallejo?

Yeah, my old polly S was not good for washes at all. White was awful for grains. It looked like sawdust was poured in. The bottles dried out really fast too. The new citadel seems to have that problem as well, but at least the grains are small.

I tend to use the old GW (flip-top lid) paints as I don\'t like the new screw lid ones.

Also, I have discovered a range of paints by Coat D\'arms which are in fact the exact paints GW used in the old flip-top pots.

I\'ve tried Vallejo and really like them. I\'ll be getting more of them as soon as I can.

Reaper paints are grainy and transparent? Are you painting with the same Pro Paints I am? These things are great, much better than Citadel paints. They go on better and I never see any grainy artifacts in them at all unless I am drybrushing. And they are more opaque than Citadel, particularily the metallics.

I use Reaper and Citadel (new). I also use Winsor & Newton acrylics sometimes (from the big tubes). They work well on minis from my experience. W&N make awesome washes too, especially Burnt Umber and Yellow Ochre colors.

I use Jo Sonja\'s acrylic gouche about 90% of the time. Very heavy with fine pigment, cover great and cost a lot cheaper than Vellajo.

Cypher,

I only use a few reaper paints, but the white and yellow I had were not as opaque as my citadel red, but were still nice. The grains were not as fine as the artists liquitex though, which is the equivalent of W&N and comes in tubes. I tend to use tube paints for most things now as the washes they make blend really well.

Well...
I use almost exclusively Citadel paints... but I have a few Ral Partha holdovers that are running on empty (*&^#^%!!!). Really the only Partha color I use is the Leather. It\'s great for a bone color base on the Crux Terminatus on my Terminators. But, I\'ve found Citadel Bubonic Brown is a suitable substitute for this.
I use the original, ink dropper bottle Citadel Inks, but these hardley ever get used, as I prefer to not use inks and paint everything with blended shading and highlights (since I\'m so particular).
I\'m curious about how Vallejo paints work, but I\'m not about to order a whole bunch of them without possibly seeing what can be achieved with them (in person, mind you). Citadel stuff is more readily avaliable around here, and I\'ve been using it for around 7 years (and the only color I have issues with is Deadly Nightshade).

Happy Painting

Badaab, pretend you saw what they can do in person, and order them already!

Seriously, especially if you are doing all blending, as you can really really thin down the vallejo, allowing you to do really, really smooth blends.

I\'m trying to mix red from Magenta, Yellow and Cyan (possible) just so I don\'t have to use my citadel red (strangely didn\'t get a good red in my order. I thought one of the colours would be more red, less orange)
