I agree with all the advice that has been given to you, but this phrase is what strikes me as the most surprising in your method.
Your aim is to paint something that is overall more bright than dark, yet you start with one of the darkest browns in the range

(unless you\'re going for a burned parchment effect).
My aim isn\'t to pick on you, but is more a general remark on most painting questions that are asked here. As Mike said, there are a plethora of recipies for any type of material (and most are fairly well documented on the web), yet many people don\'t take the time to ask themselves what properties that material has (or what they want to portray).
Your initial exchange with Anders focuses on color (and aging), Einion takes it one step further with texture effects.
So I guess my real question is what are you painting this for? Tabletop, fun, contest level, ... ? How realistic do you want to get? And I\'ll second Einion by asking \"[What did you try and] how did it go wrong\" (pics would be helpful
